NOBSDawg, who is the head soccer coach at <REDACTED> High School, just called me from the MHSAA coaches clinic at the Hilton Hotel in Jackson to say that both Ron Polk and John Cohen walked into the clinic together.

NOBSDawg said that he spoke to the both of them. He said that Cohen told him that he and Ron Polk were on the same page now and had the buried the hatchet, and Ron Polk told him that he was going to do everything he could to assist and support Cohen.

I guess now that Raffo is head coach at Arkansas State, the senile old man is back to being nice to Cohen. I still think the son of a b!tch owes our new AD a public apology.

as far as the program is concerned. And I agree he owes Byrne a public apology.

While I might agree that Polk in Starkville is good, I don't want him infecting Johnny Boy with any of his mentality.

or Starkville either for that matter. And I agree with others that he at the very least needs to apologize to Greg Byrne as publicly as he criticized him for the Cohen hire.

...without sticking his nose where it doesn't belong or opening his mouth when he shouldn't is an extremely tall order, in my opinion. Like Pat, I would rather not take the risk, and have him just gone. Obviously, it doesn't matter what we think, what's going to happen is going to happen, but I, for one, am extremely wary of this.

at camps and recruiting. Regardless of what patbitch thinks, Polk being available around MSU is a good thing.

If you haven't noticed, they have two different coaching styles. I don't want Cohen to lose his. We can all see what Polk's style got us the last few years.

I would be fine with it.

Edited to add that if he would 17ing publicly apologize for publicly embarrassing Byrne, Cohen, MSU, the fans, and the baseball program, I'd be a lot better with it.

has made the effort to mend fences. Personally, I think Byrne is big enough to move beyond the stupidity and childishness, chalking it up to the same old **** from a bitter, little underachiever, even if no public apology is forthcoming. Personally, I think hell would freeze over before the little fat bastard would admit publically that he acted like a fool. If Byrne and Cohen believe Polk adds value to the program, then it's because Polk has shown evidence that he's back on the ranch. If there's one thing that Polk can't be criticized for it's that he says what he means and he means what he says.

and doesn't deserve any forgiveness from anybody who loves MSU, until he publicly apologizes. Even with a public apology, I'd still rather he leave town, but it wouldn't stick in my craw as much when he stays.</p>

I dont see how it could be anything but good if they really have buried the hatchet.

That's a big if though. I was hoping we were finished with this ego maniac. His personality will not allow him to help someone else without trying to take over the whole show.

Pat will eventually come around, once Polk gives concrete evidence that he's had a genuine change of heart. Personally, I don't think it's unwise at all to want evidence that Polk is back on his meds and under control.

The memory of Polk's stupidity will continue to fade over time. If Polk behaves, even Pat will come around. Let him.

If you disagree, explain why. Every else seems to be able to. So far, the only thing you've come up with is that Polk has lived in Starkville for 30 years.

very well. He took the job when Polk basically begged him not to. He responded well to all the difficult questions concerning Polk's behavior. He hired his own staff his own way. Now he's got Polk right beside him- something no one really expected. It's going to be Cohen's baseball team. But he would be crazy not to use Polk as an asset to the program.

when Coach Cohen turns things around Polk will go on record as saying he got the program turned around. This keeps him from admitting that we have a coach that will accomplish more than he did.

he had his tantrum. He made a fool of himslef. I think he's finally realizing his life will so much more enjoyable by just accepting the fact that he doesn't control the baseball program any more. I think people still seem to discount the love and loyalty Polk's former players have for him. I guarantee you Cohen is very happy Polk has cooled off and now can be an appropriate part of the future of MSU baseball.

your number 1 (fundraising) primarily with former players and I'm somewhat indifferent to number 2 (camps). On number 2, I'm sure Cohen will do just fine on his own. However, for number 3 (recruiting), after seeing our pathetic level of recruiting the last couple of years with Ron Polk as the centerpiece of the program, I don't see how he will be any sort of a difference maker from his "in the background" position now. Personally, based on what I'm seeing, I really don't think Cohen and staff will need any additional assistance in recruiting anyway. If you can have a top ten baseball recruiting class at KY, then I doubt RP's presence is going to make one iota's difference in how we recruit with Cohen running the show. The ONLY positive in my mind for having Polk stay around is rounding up a few more dollars for the program from Polk's former players that still revere him and a small part of the fanbase that are ritual Polk worshippers like KB21. And this positive could easily be outweighed by potential negatives if he causes problems by getting antsy and trying to stick his nose in the program where it doesn't belong at this point.</p>

...when recruiting certain players. Same with camps. I'm not suggesting that he run a camp, just come to some in a "celebrity" role.

To those that are demanding a public apology from Polk, I just have to say this:

What if he privately apologized to Cohen, Byrne, and Raffo? The reality is, those are the ones that deserve an apology. I don't think we (the fans, alumni) necessarily deserve one from him. And to those that say he embarassed the University- no, he embarassed himself. Everyone article that I have read on the matter has said that we did the right thing and Polk was wrong. A public apology would be nice, but it's unecessary, and if he did it would be one of those hollow, prepared by a lawyer type speeches. I just don't see a need to tar and feather Polk if he has made ammends to the three that I just mentioned, and those three have accepted their apology.

And the media talking to Polk will be the last thing we need to worry about. From what I understand, Cohen probably will give them enough soundbites that they won't have to go seeking any from anyone.

Cohen was man enough to ignore Polk, take the job, be a class act, put together a coaching staff, and start recruiting. I don't think he will have any problem putting Polk in the right place. Truth is Polk did our University a HUGE favor by being a ***. Think about it, we have a brand new, very young AD and a new head baseball coach coming in. While I think everyone thought Byrne and Cohen were good hires there was going to be more of a wait-and-see mentality. Polk acting like a jackass made people rally around Byrne giving him near 100% support from the Alumni off the bat instead of having to build that coalition over the years. Cohen came into the program with similar support. That's a really good thing for our Athletic Department as a whole.

Polk can be ahuge asset helping with recruiting (including camps). Sure, his recruiting of late was not stellar but there is a big difference between having to run the nuts and bolts grind of recruiting as opposed to having to go make a few speeches and spend some time with the kids on the field during a camp. This event may have tainted our view of Polk a bit but he is still a legend in the baseball community and a kid coming to camp at MSU would love to be out on the field with Ron showing him a thing or two. If Cohen and Byrne are ok with the role Polk will play I think we need to give them the benefit of the doubt. Neither of them have lacked for balls so far.

This is setting up for Polk to extremely over play his hand in "helping" any way he can. Think about it, he comes in and little by little he is taking over certain things and trying to tell Cohen how things should be done. Saying things like "when I was coach I would make the boys ......." or "when I was coach we did it this way". This is going to put Cohen in the position of having to tell the "legend" to shut up or leave. If and when this happens, there will be a bigger tirade than before. I just dont think its a good situation to have polk around because I dont think he will be able to sit in the shadows and not stick his nose where it doesnt belong.
