The reason the logo reminds me of former coach Joe Paterno is because it was designed and introduced during the Paterno era. It has nothing to do with who was the greatest or best coach (that’s a different topic for another day).
Joe is an icon. His caricature could be the mascot for PSU.

You may want to check what the topic is. Hint: It has nothing to do with which coach is more successful, recognizable and/or famous. I never claimed Cael > Joe when it comes to any of those things. But go ahead and be outraged for no reason if it makes you feel good.
Outraged? No. Amused? Yes.

That logo was unveiled during my senior year at PSU (‘83). I remember thinking how cool that would look on our football helmets, and thought for sure it would become part of the uniform. I know there are a lot of fans that dislike it (the “chipmunk” logo), but I’ve always really liked it and it has had staying power beyond other branding elements the university tried to market.

For me, that logo always takes me back to personal memories of 1983, the first national championship (season of ‘82 but celebrated during winter/spring of ‘83), and some of the players who become acquaintances (one who will remain nameless that dated my then girlfriend who would 2 years later become my wife).

If I had to pick one player that comes to mind, it would be Franco. I know there are others, but he was “all-in” for PSU.
