So, if you're into conspiracy theories, John Horhn, who has been in state a government for several years and who also ran for mayor in the past, announced on October 2nd that he would be running for mayor. His brother, Charlie, was Benny Thompson's right-hand man for many many years. The qualifying period for mayor begins on January 2nd and ends at the end of January. The election will be next June.

If one were so inclined, one might come to the conclusion that the timing of Lumumba's indictment was intentional in an effort to slow play this to hurt Lumumba's chances to qualify, to mount a successful reelection campaign or possibly be forced to resign. If John benefits from Lumumba's legal issues, well, that's just gravy on top.

If Lumumba was forced to resign, a member of the council would be appointed to finish the term. At least one council member is rumored to be joining Lumumba with their own indictment so he probably wouldn't be chosen. The rest of the council have not indicated any interest in running for mayor so far and I doubt any of them would have a real shot of winning even if they did. Horhn would be sitting pretty.

That's probably just crazy talk, though. 😉

No lawyer here, but is this the same type of indictment that Trump faced? The one where nothing ever happens?

Whatever happened to the councilwoman? Is she in jail?

These are only rumors I've heard from locals down there. He (Chucky Labamba) was as others have mentioned long rumored to be the heir apparent for Thompson's seat. However, supposedly Thompson was not fond of the way Chucky bumbled things so badly and no longer wanted him as the heir and wasn't willing to attach his name in any way to Chucky. He pulled his support for Chucky as the heir and also the reason he has backed off of the investigation as well. Chucky is screwed as are several others that have planned/conspired with him. This will drag on for awhile but it should be really good.......

It is the worst kept secret that Thompson is not a fan of “da mare.” And the fool mare has made himself public enemy number one with a certain federal judge responsible for overseeing the federal government’s $600 MILLION water and sewer system rehabilitation program (you recall the water system failure back in 2022, right?). That process has been a god send, is well run, and is effective, but this fool with his black nationalist propensities claims it’s a conspiratorial process to “make Jackson less black.” He and his community organizer sister literally organize opposition from the community to speak against the federal assistance being provided because "the program has a white man in charge." Outside of the uneducated voters in the city, there is no support for him and no effort to cooperate with him is achievable. Until he is replaced with someone who genuinely cares about Making Jackson Viable Again, it's hopeless. Even the federal menders from DC and the federal bench in Jackson recognize this. And the US Attorney's Office in Jackson (democrat appointee) recognizes it. Bennie himself recognizes it and said as much when he told the City that there was no way in hell the federal assistance would go to the City directly but could only come through the EPA with federal court oversight.

I knew Weed was corrupt from the beginning. His dad would have gotten popped if he had not died.

Jackson Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba indicted in federal corruption probe https://www.wlbt.com/2024/11/06/jac...ar-lumumba-indicted-federal-corruption-probe/
Nah. Been under a sealed indictment for a long time now as the FBI developed co-conspirators to help the prosecution. When the councilwoman news dropped way back, they were months into negotiation. The craziest thing is that they got them on a fabricated deal to build a nice hotel by the conference center. When I initially saw that hotel announcement, I couldn't believe anyone would fund a hotel for that area...

Man. Who could have seen this coming. Oh wait. Everyone.
There has to be something to be found with the garbage contract, I suspect, OR that was so well hidden that they could not find the dirt but it smelled bad enough that they thought they would try this sting operation to see if the mayor was open to that kind of thing.

They just hung out the upside-down pineapple, he knocked on the door...

I don't know if Chokwe was ever the heir apparent or not. Their heir was always going to be whoever Bennie says it will be. But I think it's pretty clear Bennie has had enough of Chockwe's sh*t and has removed all protections. Honestly, if Bennie hand-picks a mayor for Jackson, it would be a big improvement over most of the mayors Jackson has had the last 20 years.

I've said before, if you had told me 20 years ago that Stokes would be the adult in the room, I would not believe it.

Hopefully, we're about to get someone with some sense in there. So, the Dem side has done what they needed to do, whether or not it's the way it should have been done, is another story (i.e., did it have to come to an indictment?). Whether it's Stokes or someone else, we know that they'll likely be a Dem.

So now, the Rep state must also do its part. They have to accept that they are going to have to work with, and help, the constituents of Jackson, in order to move the city forward, so it can serve the state. They can start by demoing the Vet and building JSU an on-campus stadium.
