Meyer's announcement came just a few hours ago and already the board is convinced that Mullen is going to be hired by Florida. The best part is this conclusion was reached after reading non-official sports interwebs sites and hearing what people like Holtz are speculating (shot in the dark). Need I remind you that these same kinds of websites had us convinced last year that we were going to hire Peterson away from Boise State? That, as it turns out, was built on nothing, and this is probably even worse. People are speculating and Mullen is an easy name to throw out due to his Florida connections. Other than that, nobody has any clue at this point. Back off the ledge and calm down.

As Florida has "fizzled" this year, popular opinion has been that Mullen was their missing link.

And ESPN's top candidates are:

Shanahan: a guy who was either not interested or not offered when he interviewed at UF when Zook was hired
Stoops: a guy who was either not interested or not offered when he interviewed at UF when Zook was hired
Strong: a guy who has never been a head coach
Mullen: yeah, that guy

Mullen is gone. Go ahead and come to terms with this. It might hurt less latter.

Dammit.

is definitely the top choice. People are saying if offered, he will go.

They have no more of a clue at this point than you or I do.

It's typical MSU to assume he's gone. Newton's gone to Auburn and Mullen is leaving after one 5-7 season to coach at Florida. Russell will have his right arm torn off during spring practice, Chad Bumphis will lose a leg during fall camp, and Robert Elliot will shred his knee again after Bruiser wishes for it to come to pass. Did I forget anything? The woe is me stuff is old.

If Meyer is going to stay involved in the Florida program, it makes sense that he would want a guy that he is familiar with. Also the fact that he want to stick around may scare away top coaches like Stoops. They may not want Meyer looking over their shoulder. It should be interesting to see how this plays out.

He may get the customary token interview granted to all recent Meyer disciples, but it will only be to get Boy Wonder to jump the gun and give out a raise and an extension. This deal is going to cost MSU. But not in the way so many of you think it will.

reach an all time high level of stupidity in the next few days. I think this is a good time to take a break and just wake up a month from now and figure out what happened.

Still, I say it would be silly to bump up Mullen's salary significantly after a 5 win season. Seems to me that a bump in salary to 1.5 mil with the promise to pay 300k or more for a highly qualified defensive coordinator would be the way to go. Had Ellis Johnson gotten 300k, he may not have left. This shows commitment by our athletic director to do what is best to ensure success on the field of play without being irresponsible with adequate but not unlimited funds. The moment Dan Mullen has anything other than a losing season, you just know a huge salary increase will be offered.

We will almost assuredly lose Dan Mullen eventually to a program with deeper pockets. Even so, it will be critically important that The Ninja handle this well. By doing so, he will lay the groundwork for future negotiations with highly competent replacements. Mize State doesn't have the financial resources to compete with the juggernauts of the college football world, but there is ample money available to entice excellent coaches here. I believe we would more than double Dan's 1.2 million dollar salary the moment he takes us to a bowl game. 2.5 million+ dollars ought to reel in something other than a washed up retread.

of the $2 million a year club. I personally don't have a problem with that and we have the $$$ to pay what we want within reason. I may be wrong, but I believe that after the Liberty bowl, Ellis Johnson would have been in the upper $300,000 range as he and all the coaches- including Croom-got raises. As I believe Todd said in another post, Mullen is an investement.
