I'm another long time lurker. There was a mailing list that got me started following recruiting more closely back in the early/mid 90s. I don't remember if the plotit.com site was a direct descendant of that mailing list or if someone there mentioned it along the way. I was too intimidated to post on mailing list - seemed like everyone there was way more qualified to comment than I was - and posted very little if at all on plotit. I have fond memories of the text-only page that was set up on national commit day in February to track the signed paperwork that had arrived.
@rem524, thanks for the kind words.
Some history: I was on the mailing list as well, before I ever had anything to do with a recruiting site or a message board. The guy that ran the mailing list (I forget his name) was kind of an absentee owner. He had set it up, but wasn't an active participant. So when there would be problems with his server or with the listserve (the mailing list), we'd all be floundering around, and it could take days/weeks before he would fix things. Finally, Scott Eisensmith, who was also a member of the mailing list, convinced the owner to let him take it over. Scott did a nice job running it.
Scott and I were partners on the Plotit recruiting site and message board. We got into that kind of by accident. A student at Ohio State, (Dennis Zahn, I believe), set up in '94 or '95 recruiting sites for a few B1G teams (I know there was an Ohio State site and a PSU site; I forget how many others). Those were the wild, wild, west days of the Internet, where people would take copyrighted or pay material and post it on web sites all the time. Dennis was about to be sued for doing just that, and announced that the was closing the sites. I had been conversing with him for 6 months to a year, and had become a big source for the PSU info he posted. He agreed to to send me the code to his site, provided that his name/handle came off of it. I remember posting on the listserve what was happening, and wondering if anyone on there had access to a server. Scott replied privately to me that he had access to a server, and in just a day or two we had a PSU Recruiting Site up an running. We didn't have a message board on it initially, but that was added soon after. Scott ran the hardware and software aspects of the Plotit site, and I supplied the recruiting info and ran the message board.
In 2001, we agreed to move the message board to BWI"s Rivals site, and it was there until 11/1/21, when it moved to this site.
Going back to the mailing list, I dropped out of it around the time that I moved the message board to BWI. While I had moderators that helped me with the message board, the entire process was taking a great deal of my time, so I just couldn't keep up with the mailing list.
Unfortunately, Scott Eisensmith had a family history of mental issues, and had suffered from them during his life. His issues seemed to get worse after I moved the message board (which as part of the contracts we signed, we also stopped running the recruiting site). It was really sad, as he wouldn't reply to any of my e-mails, and wouldn't take my phone calls. At some point (I don't know all the specifics), his issues got to the point where he was no longer tending to the mailing list. So Kevin ??? (he had several handles on the Rivals BWI site, fun1060, GroveCityKevin, CBOTKevin, PennStateKicks (or was it Kevin??), etc.) contacted Scott, and Scott agreed to allow him to take over the mailing list.
Sadly, Scott passed away basically from his mental issues, and then Kevin passed away from ??? (I forget the details). That's the last I heard of the mailing list. I don't think anyone took it over after Kevin's unexpected passing, but I could be wrong.
