Not much of a surprise given his mystery shrouded freshman year.
Major injury. It’s damned tough sitting out a year. We recruited a nice RB.Not much of a surprise given his mystery shrouded freshman year.
I guess we can't miss what we never had.Not much of a surprise given his mystery shrouded freshman year.
I'm betting that the coaches weren't real impressed either. Things were so quiet about this kid that it was almost as if he wasn't really even here. It should be interesting to see where he lands or if he makes it out of the portal.I guess we can't miss what we never had.
Not by much rankings wise. And there goes our running back coach’s best recruit so far.
Made me lol. He’ll be missed as much as the fart I just blamed on my dogs.
I think us NU fans best get ourselves prepared for a bumpy ride from Dec 31 through the opening of the portal on Jan 2 and beyond. We are apt to have some real ups and downs. Not by much rankings wise.
We have to hope that Stewart does a better job of identifying kids that could have physical issues coming in. Kids like the TE from LSU (Markley sp??) who's been here going on 2 years and hasn't taken a snap.I guess we can't miss what we never had.
His RB recruiting has been very underwhelming; I completely agree, but he has been used a lot in other recruiting battles. He was heavily involved with us signing Claude Mpouma this year. I wouldn't be opposed to him being focused on recruiting and we go get a better RB coach. How do we not fire our RB coach.....His room going into year 4 is an absolute sham. His recruiting has been horrid.
And even if you want to give him credit for EJ21, he sat the guy the entirety of the previous 2 seasons.
If we can't get a really good RB this year after having the BIG RB of the year, and all the touches he had, then when will Barthel bring in a real good one?His RB recruiting has been very underwhelming; I completely agree, but he has been used a lot in other recruiting battles. He was heavily involved with us signing Claude Mpouma this year. I wouldn't be opposed to him being focused on recruiting and we go get a better RB coach.
I’m not so sure that we didn’t get a really good RB this cycle. That said, I think we’re assigning primary recruiting duties by area and not necessarily position. I’m sure position coaches are in contact but at times in the past an assistant for any given area was the primary recruiter regardless of position. If we can't get a really good RB this year after having the BIG RB of the year, and all the touches he had, then when will Barthel bring in a real good one?
More importantly, we need a new RB coach who can identify and devlop talent.Definitely need a good RB in the portal
Well and Satterfield drew a play on the dry erase board when we signed DR, but that doesn't really translate to him having any impact in that decision....His RB recruiting has been very underwhelming; I completely agree, but he has been used a lot in other recruiting battles. Barthel has yet to recruit one good RB to the university of Lincoln fvcking Nebraska in 3 ******** years. At what point does his @$$ get fired too?I'm betting that the coaches weren't real impressed either. Things were so quiet about this kid that it was almost as if he wasn't really even here. It should be interesting to see where he lands or if he makes it out of the portal.
Not to mention, the # 2 or sometimes # 3 RB (Mozee) wasn't even recruited as a RB, he wound up there because the room was so weak after EJ.Barthel has yet to recruit one good RB to the university of Lincoln fvcking Nebraska in 3 ******** years. At what point does his @$$ get fired too?
Or….hear me out….Well and Satterfield drew a play on the dry erase board when we signed DR, but that doesn't really translate to him having any impact in that decision....
We just have too many staffers that suck at their job, so eternal optimistic fans try to mental gymnastic a way to keep the guy, move him to a different role or responsibility and then hire someone else to do a key part of said person's job.
Maybe you fall in this, maybe you dont....but we need to quit making excuses and writing checks to people that cant do their jobs at a level that matches how their salary ranks nationally....This isn't pop warner with parents and volunteers. These people are paid to do a job. This mindset of zero accountability, IMO has really started to rear its head on the field, where guys who cant perform play anyway. Coaches who cant perform, get a new title and a pat on the back, etc.
Id like to see the receipts on Bathels role in recruiting those players. Or any player.Or….hear me out….
there’s no limit to staff numbers. Go check out our staff roster compared to other schools, it’s huge. Rhule is taking advantage of that. Reassign Barthel to recruiting duties. You don’t like it because he needs to be banished for sucking as an RB coach. I get it. However, a key leadership principle in the marine corps is ‘task your marines in accordance with their abilities.’ I firmly believe in that. Barthel is better suited in recruiting than in coaching, IMO. Satterfield can go for all I care. His room isn’t good, his recruits haven’t been good. He has zero claim to Dylan’s commitment. But Barthel actually has value to the program that he can be designated to. He also played a huge role in acquiring Trae Taylor, 4 star RB Amir Brown, as well as Claude Mpouma, and a lot of 2027 recruiting battles like Ahmad Hudson. I’m all for accountability. I’m not for ignorantly banishing people over emotions.
No we already have too much deadweight on this coaching staff. The most effective organizations cut underperformers as quickly as possible. They don't move them somewhere else and try to hide their deficiencies. That's what bloated, crappy organizations do.His RB recruiting has been very underwhelming; I completely agree, but he has been used a lot in other recruiting battles. He was heavily involved with us signing Claude Mpouma this year. I wouldn't be opposed to him being focused on recruiting and we go get a better RB coach.
Marine corps hasn’t had a problem meeting recruiting quotas. Even during Biden. We are not like the Army or Navy, no disrespect.Id like to see the receipts on Bathels role in recruiting those players. Or any player.
I can appreciate the effort with the Marines, but cmon....They cant recruit marines fast enough, so they sure as hell arent firing them lol. A run of the mill Marine isnt getting paid a top 1% salary, and a top 1% marine isnt being reassigned constantly to mask his incompetence.....its just not a good comparison.
When you coach little league you stockpile your weakest tool players at second base and right field. You stockpile your least mobile kids at 1st and 3rd.....Yeah you can move people around, find them a position that best fits their skills, so they can maximize what abilities they DO have........but this isnt little league. The is the big leagues, and if I sign a player to blast HRs, knock in RBIs, and hit in the meat of my order(because thats what my team needed and thats what I am choosing to spend my money on) then I dont really care if hes a decent catcher who manages my pitching staff well.....I paid this hunk of beef to slap the piss outta the ball, and if he doesnt, hes getting traded
And that is a sport that has no salary cap, so to your point they could just pay everybody for the skill they DO have and ignore the ones they dont.....but thats not how it works. Accountability and results matter at this level. Period
Except with moving Barthel solely to recruiting, you aren’t “hiding deficiencies” you are maximizing his capabilities. Everyone has a role to play in the kill-chain. He’s not at his best link in that chain. No we already have too much deadweight on this coaching staff. The most effective organizations cut underperformers as quickly as possible. They don't move them somewhere else and try to hide their deficiencies. That's what bloated, crappy organizations do.
He wasn't in like a lion. There was zero hype around this RB recruit. Or should I say nothing more than anyone else had.Lol
In like a lion, out like a lamb
a perfect player microcosm for the Preacher Rhule era
He evidently gets no credit for coaching EJ this past season. Who the heck knows who is going to be “a good” RB when they get to college. Marlon Lucky was either the #1 or #2 RB when we landed him. Yeah he caught a lot of passes but he was soft, didn’t want to practice, and went down easily.Barthel has yet to recruit one good RB to the university of Lincoln fvcking Nebraska in 3 ******** years. At what point does his @$$ get fired too?
Mozee was recruited as an athlete. He played RB, WR and DB in high school. He looked really good in a couple of early games this year at RB. I think he’s going to be pretty darned good with a full off season in the weight room and spring ball. It would be nice to find that 220 lb 4.5 bruiser. I’m not sure what people expected out of him with EJ sucking up so many carries. Not to mention, the # 2 or sometimes # 3 RB (Mozee) wasn't even recruited as a RB, he wound up there because the room was so weak after EJ.
Matt needs to quit fcking around with non-producing staffers and launch them on their way somewhere else. The only home run he's had is Eck, and that one was forced on him.
First and last sentence should be burned into the minds of some of these posters. Somehow EJ became a great back and the deal with Barthel is that he didn't recognize it and played others. In truth, EJ had to get ready as a RS freshman when Gabe and Rahmir went down. He got reps he would not have gotten if not for those injuries. They want "marquee" backs out of HS. Exactly what the hell has NU offered a prospective feature back since Abdullah left the building? Playing time and a sh*t OL. In fact, this year is the first year in some time where NU recruiters can show evidence of real success at that position. EJ's success should give NU more weight in the portal. He evidently gets no credit for coaching EJ this past season. Who the heck knows who is going to be “a good” RB when they get to college. When we took Ameer he was a 3 star RB offered as a corner by other programs and he beat out 2 highly ranked 4 stars. So much for trashing the Mozee offer. Mozee was recruited as an athlete. He flashed early in the season
Jamal Rule had offers from Wisconsin, Michigan State, Virginia Tech, MIAMI, and NC State. None of those schools have ever produced good RBs right? Parker had multiple P4 offers. Nelson was a top 30 RB recruit which is higher than Ameer was.
Let’s see what these kids do when given more opportunities before we relegate them to the trash heap. Your feelings of entitlement to top 5* RB recruits I’m afraid don’t fit the reality of the dumpster fire we’ve been for the past decade.
The Mozee kid is very athletic and showed an ability to stay on his feet during his limited carries.Mozee was recruited as an athlete. He played RB, WR and DB in high school. He looked really good in a couple of early games this year at RB. I think he’s going to be pretty darned good with a full off season in the weight room and spring ball. @Tim Verghese do you feel like Barthels "recruiting prowess" is invaluable enough to the staff that he needs a special role created for him, if Rhule decided a different RBs coach was needed? Or if he cant handle the development AND roster management/recruiting side of his job, should he(hypothetically) be culled as another dead weight assistant?Marine corps hasn’t had a problem meeting recruiting quotas. Even during Biden. We are not like the Army or Navy, no disrespect.
If you watch Tim Verghese’s recruiting videos he talks about how heavily involved Barthel and Mozee are in the guys I mentioned. There’s your receipts.
Barthel is also not in the 1% salary, if we’re talking college coaches. You keep blending Satterfield with this conversation and I’m solely speaking on Barthel. He can be reassigned. Satterfield has to go.
Accountability would to put him where he’s better suited. You don’t fire a doctor because they suck at emergency medicine, when they’re better at cardiac care. You reassign them to where they’re best suited.
We’re over paying for just about all our assistants because we’ve been such a dumpster fire for the past decade. Fact. I don’t like it either but it’s been what it took to fill a staff with guys from P4 programs instead of the NAIA.@Tim Verghese do you feel like Barthels "recruiting prowess" is invaluable enough to the staff that he needs a special role created for him, if Rhule decided a different RBs coach was needed? Our RBs coach makes a top 1% national salary. I guarantee he makes more than your grunt Marine example lol.
First the Marines, now Doctors? I work with multiple rural hospitals(who are way more desperate for doctors than a metro) and you replace doctors all the time for poor fit......They don't like rural life, they dont like on call hours, they dont like more generalized medicine and would prefer specializations, on and on....You hire then to be a small town, general practice doctor, and if they dont fill that role, you send em packing. In the city it's even worse, because you and the doctor both have more options to find the fit youre looking for.
This is exactly what I am talking about, we are going thru mental gymnastics, to justify paying a guy hundreds of thousands of dollars, to get demoted from his RBs coaching position and get a cushy recruiting analyst job where he helps sign 1 guy per year. It makes s
No sense.
Yeah he coached EJ....and he also had him on a milk carton for 1 3/4 seasons until DH came in and forced his hand.First and last sentence should be burned into the minds of some of these posters. I don’t like it either but it’s been what it took to fill a staff with guys from P4 programs instead of the NAIA.Add: we way over paid Rhule. IF he ever leaves, I want to try the Iowa State model and hire a Big Sky staff.
You forget what EJ was early on. Lots of dancing and poor pass pro.Yeah he coached EJ....and he also had him on a milk carton for 1 3/4 seasons until DH came in and forced his hand.
So how much credit does he really get for that?
We are in year 4, he has a talentless, and void of depth room. His best prospect is a converted WR who had like 30 carries in his career. Man you people are insane. The lengths you will go to keep bad coaches around. Frost. Bo. Satt. Donnie. Mickey. Barthal. Etc.
That situation is unique and no one recruited Markway. He left LSU over the summer without entering the portal. He then paid for his own trips to schools and wasn't allowed to tour the athletic facilities during the trips. He chose Nebraska, enrolled in classes and then told the staff he wanted to tryout for the team. The first year he wasn't on scholarship, not sure about the 2nd year. But the fact that he rehabbed his first injury and was ready to go before he was hurt again, and is now rehabbing again and attempting to be ready for 2026 season says to me that this is a guy you keep on your roster. There are other players who, arrived at nearly the same time as Markway, who were injured once and are still not ready to play. I would be more understanding of recruiting over those players rather than a player like Markway. We have to hope that Stewart does a better job of identifying kids that could have physical issues coming in. Kids like the TE from LSU (Markley sp??) who's been here going on 2 years and hasn't taken a snap.
I wonder if the kid is still injured or if Stewart told him we were gonna recruit over him and he just took a hike? If so, I don't have a problem with Stewart's approach.
Why no running backs out of the Omaha area? Are running back types no longer interested in playing football? Getting quality recruits out of the entire state of Neb has been totally hit and miss for many years. Our RB room looks like an NAIA room talent wise....
Not true. He was co#1 RB with Dowdell under Satt and made a couple of starts before Holgersen even arrived. He was used more in the passing game after Holgersen arrived which made him more versatile but to pretend that he wasn't used for 2 years is a false narrative.Yeah he coached EJ....and he also had him on a milk carton for 1 3/4 seasons until DH came in and forced his hand.
