James Franklin: New Penn State athletic director will be a 'critical' hire
Penn State university is set to appoint a new athletic director after Sandy Barbour announced she intends to retire this summer.
whoever it is will be roundly condemned here as soon as the announcement is made
Considering the administrative hires generally suck, why break the streak?

Here is a place to start for the new AD:
Recognize the unprecedented contributions of Joe Paterno to Penn State football, Penn State athletics, and Penn State University.
Unfortunately, that ship has sailed. A place to start with the new AD is a person that can fundraise and knows the ins and outs of NIL. The wrong answer is recognizing what's real and what's not with NILHere is a place to start for the new AD:

Fundraising without addressing Joe's legacy will be a challenge. Not impossible, but a challenge. Winning a national championship would help.Unfortunately, that ship has sailed. Yes and no. I agree it’s mostly sailed in general but it hasn’t in terms of fundraising.Unfortunately, that ship has sailed. A place to start with the new AD is a person that can fundraise and knows the ins and outs of NIL. The wrong answer is recognizing what's real and what's not with NIL
Disagree. I see a James Franklin who wants everyone to like him, but is fearful that his shtick is up….albeit paid 9 years in advanceI smell a new contract negotiation in Franklin's near future. It is important he remind the new AD how things work around here.
According to CJF, they now have 9 Lettermen on the coaching staff. Is this an attempt to bridge the past and show loyalty for fundraising in a back door way? I don't know that answer. I would want an AD that concentrates on the sports and fundraising rather than facilities and upgrades. Seeing a large facility upgrade through should be someone who has experience in dealing with that from facilities management perspective. Of course that's why millions are wasted on feasibility studies, but AD have no clue about construction projects. And they shouldn't.Yes and no. I agree it’s mostly sailed in general but it hasn’t in terms of fundraising.
The only thing I’d add to your list for the new AD is experience in dealing with large facility improvements. Ideally, get someone who’s more cutting edge forward focused rather than the usual PSU status quo/ ‘just enough’ approach.
An interloper who has toiled at such esteemed academic institutions such as UNI, Merrimack College, Clarkson University, and Manhattanville College doesn’t seem to meet your criteria.I would want an AD that concentrates on the sports and fundraising rather than facilities and upgrades. The reason CJF got that contract is because he knew Barron and Sandy would be leaving and used it as leverage. If CJF bolted this is the convo:Critical hire so CJF can extract another $50mm for going .500 from the next chump. I can’t believe we got a new prez that would come in with that fresh albatross still hanging in the window.
More so from an organizational and funding approach. Think the opposite of Sandy at Cal.According to CJF, they now have 9 Lettermen on the coaching staff.
