The BWI team regularly talk about the fact that we thought that Kaden Saunders was KJ Hammer. Then we found out he wasn't.

There is no receiver on the current Penn State roster who comes close to KJ Hamler.

The WR room is without a doubt at rock bottom and the worst during the Franklin era.
Coming in to last year I didn’t think it could get worse. I was wrong.

By his own admission Saunders has admitted he hasn't worked hard enough to be his best. He says that is changing we will see this year. If not then JF needs to make a decision on him IMHO

Saunders came into the program cocky and didn’t work hard. If I remember, Nate Bauer spoke a few weeks ago that Saunders will never be Hamler because he is slow and can’t get separation. Sounds like the coaching staff has been putting a lot of pressure on Saunders to contribute this year. If he doesn’t contribute this fall, he gone!

looking at Saunders track times at Worthington, he we not elite in long speed. was there an assumption he had elite speed?

actually who in the WR group if any have what we would consider elite deep speed that will scare a team? i thought that Meiga and McClain had high end 100m speed from HS - like 10.4 range, but they are gone and were not good anyway. is our WR problem mainly because they are all just slow?

Don’t know about long speed but reportedly ran a 4.31 40. Doesn’t sound slow to me.

I read this:

FBS Power 5 Wide Receiver

Physical Measurables:

  • Height: 6'2"
  • Weight: 190 lbs.

Stats:

  • 40yd: 4.5
  • Bench: 235 lbs.
  • Squat: 315 lbs.

Coach Keys:

Must be a constant threat anytime he is on the field. Must have an instant release off of the LOS with low pad level and little wasted movement, a burst into the route, one step cuts, impeccable catching ability, and the ability to separate himself from defenders with rare top end speed and elusiveness. He must be able to catch a jump ball as easy as a post, shallow, slant, or hitch. He must be comfortable running all routes, possesses rare ball skills, have a great combination of size & speed, and a willingness to block. He is a multiple year All-State player and in some cases an All-American.

Saunders is 5'10" 180 lbs so he's 4" short for a typical P5 WR which is a lot. It looks like his speed is fine but is he quick off the LOS? Can he win 50/50 balls? I don't know his strength stats but sometimes winning those 50/50 balls is more about attitude.

Just to clarify, what you pasted are the expectations for a top-of-the line CFB WR, not “typical.” “He is a multiple year All-State,” is a definite outlier.

It seems to me that in order for a 5' 10" WR to excel at this level they need elite speed or shiftiness.

Working harder won't make him taller.

Worthington?? Try Ki-Jana Carter's Westerville South. They're about 10-15 miles apart. I drive by both on a regular basis as I live in between them.... That's like confusing North Allegheny and North Hills.

Size is not his problem. It's been work ethic.

so that makes him the same speed as Hamler and a little bit bigger. so when someone says we thought he was KJH but know he is not, it must not be the measurables.

Easy fix- just write bigger checks so PSU can buy better receivers. Money talks and BS walks.

Yep, lack of separation speed but Omari and Harrison might surprise, lack of contested ball skills, but until Fleming showed up, real lack of effort relative to every other position group on the team. If he changes the culture of the room this year it will likely save Franklin from permanent stigma of a "low ceiling coach" as he is referred to on Buckeye and Wolverine talk shows.

Franklin really is a low ceiling coach. Until he starts beating teams like Ohio State and Michigan, that tag will stick.
