Home of the Kenzo Mouthwash. I have a friend who escaped from Kensington and has done quite well. He feels blessed.

I was just on Kensington Avenue last week. It's bad, but the video makes it look worse than what I just saw.

I had a doctor visit this week in Port Richmond. There were drug addicts and homeless camps under every overpass and in each open lot. Port Richmond is a decent neighborhood. We need to start taking more extreme measures to stop the drug epidemic. The Status Quo can't go on like this much longer.

I’m not doubting you, whenever some entity creates a video to expose a problem it’s always tilted towards making their point. But overblown or not, this is not the way human beings should exist. If one can call it existing.

I agree. Philadelphia is known to have the purist heroin and fentanyl in America. My daughter was treating a addict in a Philadelphia hospital from Austin Texas. The treatment center in Austin had him transferred to a center in Philadelphia and the guy told my daughter he was thrilled to have been sent to Philly because of the purity of the stuff being sold. Needless to say, once he arrived here he decided to spend about 6 months on the streets getting high before going through treatment.

They should be arrested and jailed. Let them fight out their detoxing in a cell. That’s much more humane than letting this go on.

They aren't all addicts. Kensington Avenue has an elevated train above the road (an EL) which provides some shelter for homeless. Homeless are often mentally ill, and not necessarily drug addicts.

Forced detox doesn't work. They have to want to be sober or they won't stay sober and even then it's a daily struggle. Heroin/Fentanyl becomes a powerful addiction. Now they are mixing in Xylazine, a horse tranquilizer, which doesn't respond to narcan while creating big rotting sores all over their bodies.

Did you think I meant to sweep everybody on the street and jail them whether they are using or not? That’s silly.
I am well versed in drug addiction and mental illness. I’ll tell you what absolutely does not work. Letting them continue to sit on the sidewalk using in public. It’s illegal. Arrest them and put them in jail. Forced detox is a hell of a lot more effective and humane than passive allowance.

I have to believe that an issue is a lack of facilities to move them to.

(Hmm…since PSU needs to close some campuses to get rid of bloat, convert them to (actual) prisons. o_O )

Or send a few buses to Rehoboth Beach. There is a beachfront house there that could accommodate them.

Or to a golf club in Bedminster, NJ. Or a resort in Palm Beach, FL since all 3 locations have about the same significance (or insignificance) in the epidemic. If you think this wasn’t a problem from 2016-2020 then you were deliberately looking the other way. The drug epidemic has been a problem for decades with no real solution from Washington, no matter who lives a 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.

P.S. This is a Penn State Football message board. Not a political conversation test board. The original poster specifically said not to get political, but you had to dip your toes in the water. If you want to discuss the political side of it further, take it to a test board somewhere. Don’t ruin this board with politics.

How about we send them to all 4 locations? That would get some action.

I did some work with a group doing housing in Philly.

I was invited to a reception held at a Kensington non profit that ran housing/counseling programs for the neighborhood. They had just completed a neighborhood cleanup day and collected over 250,000 syringes from a two block area that included a railroad cut where junkies shot up out of site of police.

I was flabbergasted. They told me they counted the syringes based upon the numbers that could be collected in a five gallon bucket. “Where do they get the syringes?” I asked. “We hand them out so they can shoot up and not get hepatitis b or aids.from shared needles” I was told.

Think about that. Rather than see the people get sick and die from communicable disease these soft headed do gooders decided it was better to killl prople with drugs, and let the neighborhood deal with the consequences. More police? Legal sanctions? Psychiatric commitment? None of that. Instead they decided to be the equivalent of aids at a concentration camp.

I went back to my Board and said it was time to cut ties rather than be associated with these morally bankrupt people who sucked in grant dollars to pay their salaries.

We should round up all the homeless, give them a beating and make them work. It will be good for their mental health. We can start by having them clean up all their trash. We can rebuild the infrastructure with cheap labor

Who paid for his trip to Philly, me?

I like the “give them a beating” part. Nice touch.

This is really sad. I don’t pretend to have a solution, and I certainly don’t want to get political. Just a sad situation in Philly.

Warning: Some images are graphic.

You are in dire need of the Weather thread coming back....or a Midnighter poll!

Said entity should be focusing more on the devastation and despair in Maui, but oh wait, that’s not in their wheel house.
That said, remember these are someone’s children and pray for them.

House I grew up in is on Jasper ST., one block east and one block North of the K&A intersection. I moved out in ‘73 and my mom moved out about 1990 when it started going to ****.
I was just up there in early June for a funeral, and my son wanted to drive around there. Stopped at a light at the SW corner of K&A and some guy was injecting a needle in a girls neck right next to the car window, and there was a cop car behind us.
I don’t get how this is allowed to go on and rather than doing something to clean things up, they give out syringes, food, and other services which enables the problem to continue.
Feel sorry for the folks that don’t have the ways or means to move away from the neighborhood.

Here’s the Parish Church (Ascension) in the neighborhood where I was raised. Spent my first 8 years of school there. Got married there in ‘74. Church closed down due to lack of interest and the addicts/street people moved on in.
Sad scene.

I played my youth football in the Police Athletic League (PAL) during the early 70's. The kids from Kensington were the toughest in the league. The games were brutal and you were sure to be sore for a week. Good times!
