our kickers the last two years have been portal. last year we brought in FG and Punt super elite HS recruits, but they are not our kickers now. If you looked at those two guy in HS film and at camps they were both kicking at college level - especially distance. Not sure if we have given up on these guys, but is chasing HS kickers especially with scholarships a good strategy? Or is it better to just go to portal for solutions?

Portal is preferable to recruiting out of high school. And only a super-idiot offers on the basis of camp performance.
Have seen plenty of videos of high school kids booting them from 50 yards out on a tee, in a park, no rush and then crap their pants in a live game from 30 yards.

A kid in our neighborhood practiced kicking all the time at our high school under the conditions you describe. He was awesome. We used to call him Jan Stenerud. He went out for the team in high school and in uniform couldn't kick it more that six feet off the ground.
Yep. Or the "old-fashioned" way. Bring in a kid (or two) as a walk-on each year, Hope/expect that 1 out of 3 turns out to be solid.
Yup. PSU has three on scholarship and one, a portal transfer, actually kicks. Some people are too smart for their own good.
