He was a big loss this year and could have made an impact next year. The good news is that Wheatly & Lane both got a lot of experience that should help next year. I'm assuming Wheatly returns which will be critical because Reed will be gone.

I think we want the kinds of players who have a legit path and the motivation to play in the NFL. And sooner in their careers than later. I can't fault this kid for taking the shot. Who's to say coming back next year would be injury free? He may as well get paid now.

I think we all went to college to find a career path that would pay us enough to live well enough and perhaps raise a family. If the career is football, it’s hard to knock a kid who could lose that entire career path by staying in school any longer.

It’s a no-brainer that Winston, or anyone in a similar situation, go to the NFL. But there’s something to be said for staying in college for four years, that’s almost always a positive if you discount the potential of lost income. (Interesting that I felt the need to use the word potential.) I loved working with my seniors.

I guess he has enough on tape to get a solid draft grade. Hopefully he does well, makes his millions, and supports Penn State NIL.

Why? It seems to me that he should go if he is still likely to be a 1st or 2nd round pick. If he drops to the 3rd round because of injury concerns he might be better off earning $800k of NIL while proving he's healthy.

I suppose I’m operating under the assumption that Winston would be a 2nd rounder at worst. I imagine he’s already spoken with some draft “insiders” and has what he considers to be an acceptable draft scenario.

My assumption is that he's been working out and feels confident that he'll be able to test well before the draft.
