Because there are apparently 10 of these awards. Hasn't Beamer already won 2 or 3 of them? He was voted SEC COY by the coaches earlier this week was was USA Today SEC COY last week and I believe there was one prior to that. Lee was voted SEC COY by the SEC media yesterday. They had a surprisingly good year, but seems to odd to pick the coach of a team that finished 6-6.

The Bama upset was noteworthy and certainly out of character for Vandy but still 6-6 and losing conference record.
Beamer far exceeded preseason predictions by the same media, and they ignore it? Shameful!!!

I take it as more of a consolation prize for Lea. Beamer has already been named SEC COY by USA Today, AP and SEC coaches.

Ron Morris must have been the swing vote.

I really couldn’t care one way or another who won this award, but I’ll still give my two cents. Seems pretty ridiculous if you ask me to give it to a coach who led his team to a 6-6 record. Sure, they beat Alabama, but they also lost to Georgia State. Switch those two games around and is he still even in the running for coach of the year? Apparently all it took was one single win that was out of the ordinary to win him this award. And again, I’m not hating on their coach at all. Really couldn’t care less. Just seems the Alabama win is quite literally the only thing that mattered when giving him this award.

Well, part of it also is the name Vandy. We can rise up occasionally, but for Vandy, it's unheard of.

At least, that may be part of the oerception.

Big thing for me is they had a losing conference record. I mean, we're talking about SEC COY, so your SEC record should be a major factor.

And, yes, I also could not really care one way or the other. Beamer has already won it 3x this year.

Right. So let's say switch the Bama and Missouri games for Vanderbilt. Same overall record, same SEC record, but nobody would be making any kind of argument to give it to him instead of Beamer. Beating Missouri would be unexpected and would them some publicity, but they were billed as world beaters when they beat Alabama. And I'd say Alabama and Missouri were fairly comparable teams this year in terms of talent.

I had a whole message set to say the coach of the year is almost always the overachiever award, for the team that does better than everyone expects. It always seems that way to me, and it’s definitely part of why our coaches win the award. But then…

I decided to see how often Saban won the award. It was, to put it mildly, quite often. I know that shouldn’t be a surprise since he is undoubtedly the Goat. But I guess to me, it just seems like the overachievers win it way more often than the obviously great teams and coaches.

Yes, I think of it typically going to the coach who did more with less and exceeded expectations.

Kirby Smart should have won it. Winning the SEC with the toughest schedule in college football. Oh well…on to the National Championship.
