Short of physically touching a player (see Leavitt), I expect coaches to sometimes abuse players.
I think Mangino and Leach are both getting a raw deal.
In Leach's case, a mountain is being made out of a mole hill. If it weren't Craig James kid, it'd be much less discussed.

If you don't like it walk out of the *@#*$#% closet and transfer to another school. Now, if they forced him into the closet and physically restrained him from trying to leave we have a problem, but short of that you need to decide if that's the team you want to play for. He was put in a cold, dark place because that is what the doctor suggested. He was made to stand, poor baby. He was put in a LARGE electrical closet used by the press to meet (so essentially a meeting room with electrical stuff in it) but was moved because the buzzing was making his head hurt. That kind proves he wasn't abused in any way. The doctor said that nothing he was asked to do would have any effect on the injury and would not cause harm.
My guess is this wasn't the first time James was a major ***** and Leech was tired of it. He made him stand to test him and see how tough he was and this incident proves that his isn't tough at all.
