and their Shaffer-Newton comparisions:

Newton will play in an offense tailored for his skill set- Much like Omar Conner in Crooms' offense, Shaffer was thrown into an offense he was not prepared nor had the intelligence to run. Conner and Shaffer would have been great Spread QB's, but instead were the ol square block into round hole.

Stop with the idiotic comparisions- its apples to oranges

I wonder if Mullen declares Newton to be the starter before he even steps on campus? I highly doubt it. Not saying he won't be, but I doubt he's declared to be such.

would be that your recruiting would instantly improve like OM's did after Shaeffer committed.

If for some reason Cam Newton bombs (or doesn't make it), our backups look to be MUCH better than Brent Schaffer's back up.

With that said, with all the hoopla over his recruitment, I would enjoy seeing him pull a Schaeffer wherever he goes just for the sake of it since he's obviously playing this up for as long as possible.

If Malzahn leaves Auburn though for say the Texas Tech job, and he's signed with them already, then he may have a chance to pull a Schaeffer. In Mullen's system, the odds for it happening are unlikely.

Mullen >>>>>>> Orgeron.

Even if Mullen was running an offense that didn't fit Newton as well as a spread option does, I believe Mullen would have enough intelligence to change the offense to fit personnel.

Orgeron was a moron. We all know that.

One more difference you didn't point out is that Newton will be on campus and practicing in January. Schaeffer didn't even set foot on Mississippi's campus until 2 weeks before their first game. Not to mention that Mullen has coached Newton for 2 years already. He knows what we're getting in Newton. There's a reason Schaeffer transferred down from Tennessee and it didn't have a damn thing to do with a laptop computer.

unless there is an OC dumb enough to insist on trying to make him a pocket passer. As long as Crooms is in St. Louis, I see that as unlikely wherever he goes.

Somewhere, Omar Conner say 17 Crooms and the golf cart he rode in on after his horse collapsed on his fat ***.

Is a prime example of WHY you RS a freshman QB. To be fair, Jackie messed him over to by making him play WR for maybe 20 snaps during a 2-10 season. If we had been able to RS Conner, and actually developed him instead of shuttling him between QB/WR, he would have been better to. Conner was a pretty decent QB his senior year, which should have been his RS Jr. year. If we had Conner as a RS senior QB in 07, I daresay that we would have needed a little less luck that year to pull out those wins. And he sure as heck wouldn't have thrown six picks against LSU.

That's why I was saying the only chance for that to happen with Newton would be for him to sign with AU and have Malzahn leave for TTU after the signing, so that they have to hire a new OC that may be able to mess it up.

And yes, Conner was misused as well.

The funny thing about Schaeffer is that he wanted to go somewhere with a pro style offense, because he wanted to prove he could do it in the pros. He'd have been better off in a spread option, and he could've worked that into a deal like Pat White has with Pittsburgh. Schaeffer could've even tried to go the Michael Spurlock route. He was athletic enough to play other positions at the next level and maybe eventually evolve into a Wildcat trigger man for some team that wants a wrinkle, but he didn't want to do that.

In the 2007 Egg Bowl first half and the 2007 LSU game, we had him in more spread sets, and we ran some simple zone read with him, and those six quarters were some of the more successful offensive quarters we had under Orgeron. Though it was nice to see us do something, it only served to piss me off because it just showed how much we had wasted him.
