Rap is still crap for the tone-deaf.So are broad, sweeping statements (and I don't listen to much rap).
For people that grew up listening to Western style music, melody is an important part of the song. In more recent times, vocal melody in particular is key. For many African/eastern forms of music, rhythm is more important. In fact, many forms of African and Indian music involve drums only and it's extremely complex. Being influenced by African descendants, rap places a heavy emphasis on rhythm and not on vocal melody (although there are often melodies played by brass, keyboards, etc). Just because rap chooses to emphasize a different aspect of music than that of Western style music does not make it crap. As with any music, there is good rap and bad rap.Rap is still crap for the tone-deaf.
The lyrics are all doggerel and the “music” is infantile. For people that grew up listening to Western style music, melody is an important part of the song. Perhaps you are thinking crude and harsh lyrics of gansta rap, but that is just one particular rap style. The lyrics are all doggerel and the “music” is infantile.

Many rap artists choose to address life and problems in the inner city quite poignantly, particularly amongst the black community. Public Enemy, Common, Queen Latifah, Eminem, Nas, Rakim just a few examples.
Again, your idea of good music comes from a Western perspective. People from a different perspective may find other aspects of music more important. You can not like a music, but still give it respect.
You got it all out of your system now? Move along to the 800th thread celebrating the Stones, Beatles, Led Zep and all that other overhyped nonsense that old out of touch white guys hold so dear ...The lyrics are all doggerel and the “music” is infantile.

Let's not swing the pendulum too far. Those bands are absolutely fantastic. There is no reason rap and classic rock can't both be held dear.

Or Miles Davis, Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Nat King Cole. So very old-fashioned.Not to speak of Bach, Beethoven and Mozart, all overhyped out of touch whitys.
So just try some jazz/rap fusion.Or Miles Davis, Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Nat King Cole. So very old-fashioned.
I didn't say otherwise. But music thread after music thread celebrates them, and their ilk, and no one's rushing in there saying "this all sucks." One thread related to rap, that doesn't denigrate it, and some turd has to jump in the punch bowl right away. Music doesn't start and end with the classic rock crew.Let's not swing the pendulum too far. Those bands are absolutely fantastic. There is no reason rap and classic rock can't both be held dear.

Totally get it. I will never understand the urge of some to crap on other people's interests.I didn't say otherwise. This song is up there with Led Zeppelin and the Rolling Stones. It's excellent. But talking schmak on the legendary Kings of rock and roll is bad form and does not help your argument.
They're both great.
