Just got 3 tickets tonight for the Northwestern game (bringing my wife and 1 daughter who may tour Penn State while we’re there) as a 50th birthday present from my siblings. Haven’t been at Penn State since Michigan game in ‘95, to the best of my recollection. I have no idea n where to stay, coming from Lexington, KY that Friday. Any suggestions or ideas? Beyond that, I have no idea on kickoff time or tailgating. I’m honestly at a loss. Last time I went I was single and free, now my oldest has already graduated college and my third is looking at where to attend next year! Thanks for any help you guys can provide.

Flying? Driving? Bringing Pappy to a tailgate, you can come to ours! 😁 There are rooms at Super 8 Wyndham and Wyndham Gardens (close to State College via Booking.com) that won’t cost you a small fortune. You are more than welcome to come to our tailgate in lot 34. If you are driving and need a parking pass let me know. Game time not established right now. I would anticipate a noon game.

Driving, possibly after work that day or taking the day off and driving up. Would love to be there Friday night but guessing that won’t happen.
Edit: Not planning on bringing Pappy. A little out of my price zone. I will enter a few lotteries for a bottle though. The info is much appreciated!

@rudedude gave some good info. I'll expand a bit on what he posted.

I have no idea n where to stay

that's likely to be the biggest challenge. It's going to cost you more than you probably would like to pay -- that's how things are for home FB games. Basically, you have to decide if you want to rent a house, stay at a Bed & Breakfast, or rent a hotel room (or 2). Houses are likely the most expensive, but in other ways the most satisfying. I'm actually coming up for the same game (my 1st trip to a home game since 2015), and just a week or so ago was able to get a home for that weekend. Try airbnb.com, vrbo.com, or craigslist (https://pennstate.craigslist.org/search/vac). (I think there are also a couple of web sites that specialize in State College lodging, but you'll have to search for them, as I don't have their URLs.) Bed & breakfast spots can be found at: https://happyvalley.com/sleep/bed-and-breakfasts/

With hotels, the availability will be better, and the cost will be lower, the farther away you are from State College. The flip side of that is that it also will limit how much time you get to spend walking around the campus, eating out, buying swag, or going out in town during the evening. You can find hotels via Google searches for hotels in State College, via kayak.com or any of the other travel sites, or via https://happyvalley.com/sleep/hotels-motels-&-inns/

You're not going to save any money, or have an easier time lining up a place to stay, if you delay on this. Seriously, you should start working on this ASAP. It won't take you long to figure out the availability, and the costs, for that weekend, and then you can decide how much you want to spend, and how close or far you want to be from State College.

I have no idea on kickoff time

Right now, no time has been set for the KO. The networks will gobble up the premier games in the summer, and schedule their KO times. The NW game is likely to not be set until either 2 weeks before the game, or 6 days before the game. You'll know before the game, so at this point it's not a big deal.

tailgating

this can be a challenge for someone traveling a good distance to the game. You could try to do it yourself. However, you'll first have to line up parking (see below). And then you'd probably want to bring a canopy in case it's raining on game day. Beyond that, if you want to do your own tailgate I'd suggest that you do it the easy way, and pick up lunch meat, bread (or something else you like), snack, and drinks, the day before the game (or 2 days), and bring them with you. There are places you can purchase such things the day of the game, but if it's a noon start, and you're not staying in State College, that would be a challenge for you unless you're a really early riser. Beyond that, take up @rudedude's offer (I've been at his tailgate a few times; he does a nice job), or even post something the week of the game explaining that it's your 1st game back to PSU since '95, and that you'd like to visit a few tailgates of board members, and you'll likely get some invites.

Parking:

Basically, you can buy a parking pass from somebody that has one for sale, or you can purchase a single-game pass from PSU. The first option enables you to get a reserved spot, but it will likely cost some $$. On the old site, I would just tell you to go to the Ticket Exchange board, as there were always parking passes on sale for each game. Alas, so far BWI has elected not to add a Ticket Exchange board to the new site. So, you'd have to hunt around. If you don't go that route, then you'll want to buy a pass from PSU in advance. (You can purchase them when you get to the lots, but they charge you more.) These are the general parking passes, and you'll be parking on grass, on Ag Sci lots. FWIW, while you do want to address this before your trip, you don't have to do so ASAP. I've lined up tix and housing for my stay for the NW game, but probably won't worry about a parking pass (I'll actually need 2) until September.

It was very nice of your siblings to get the tix for you for the game. Have fun showing off the campus, the town, and the stadium to your wife and your daughter. Hopefully, the weather will be great for the game, and PSU will play well and get a W.

Thanks Tom. Great info.
They told me they bought a parking pass for me. Not sure where it’s at, but at least I have that and a tickets to start with. Early start is not much of a problems for us. I work in the school system and typically am up by 5:00 to urinate….
But if it’s a noon game, little chance I’ll set anything up for my own tailgate. Back in the old days, I’d just wander around and find hospitable hosts, but I’m not sure my wife and daughter will go for that. Again, I appreciate the insight.

Good luck now. There are less than 5,000 hotel rooms in the 60 mile radius. Stay in HBG, 90 minutes away. You can still spend time in SC before or after depending on KO time.

It’s an 8:hour drive from Lezington to SC. You really plan on doing that after work? Good luck. I could not do it. FWiw flights to Pit are $525 or so. Then drive up. It’s 2 1/2 hours or so. Flights to SC are double that.

Connerpozlee,

There is a Comfort Suites just off I99 around 10 miles north of Altoona. It's a decent place, but still 35 miles from State College.

They have rooms available at $200/night.

Downside is for a noon start, I sat in traffic for well over an hour on North Atherton. In fact, I got out of my car and hit a port-a-potty (I wound up being a trend setter in that regard). Of course, once we got onto Park Ave. it was a breeze to the assigned parking pasture out behind the law school building.

Enjoy your day. My family did the same for me on my 70th when Duzz and his minions visited Beaver Stadium 3 years back.

We usually do day trips for games, but we stayed at The Graduate on Atherton a couple of weeks ago for a 45th year PSU reunion during the arts festival and it was nice and convenient.

But if I was coming in all the way from Lexington and hadn't been to PSU for 25+ years I would want to stay both Friday and Saturday nights. And if I hadn't been to SC in all that time I'd just book a room now in SC and pay the price. You can take the PSU bus up to the stadium if you don't want to walk. Staying in SC eliminates the need for a parking pass at the game. You'd get in too late Friday to do much of anything other than maybe night cap at on of your old favorite places. Then up to the stadium on Sat. AM. With the noon game you could spend the rest of Saturday enjoying SC and the campus. Then on Sunday go the the creamery and have them pack your favorite flavors with 10 hr dry ice for the trip back to Lexington. My son is still in seminary in Louisville so I'm very familiar with about 90% of your trip, with the worst part getting through Cinci...... Even if you can't get into a SC hotel now, staying close by facilitates getting back to SC Sunday AM to shop or just enjoy some more of SC before heading home.

The suggestion about staying north of Altoona is worth a look. But then you'll have to likely get into the traffic jam on Saturday AM. If you do that my recommendation would be to get up very early Saturday and get to SC before 8 AM, park at Eisenhower Auditorium garage (have to get there early to get in, no pass required from my experience, just $40 or $50.....). That lot location is our favorite as you could go the to Waffle House for breakfast (i.e. if you get there before 8 AM), and then leisurely get to the game or to a tailgate. You could still spend the rest of Saturday in SC with the relatively short drive back to near Altoona when you wear out. Down side is that you might not want to go back to SC Sunday AM and pick up your ice cream..... ;)

Most important thing right now is to make a decision and get your reservations NOW.

Have fun!!

There are usually a fair amount of room cancelations in State College the week of the game, usually starting around Wednesdays. Go ahead, make your reservations in Altoona or wherever, and if you didn't have to put a deposit down go ahead and call around on Wed or Thur to State College hotels. If you find a room it will definitely beat trying to drive in on game day, and will give you a chance to explore the area and university.

Since you've not been back since 95, be forewarned that traffic patterns have changed immensely, not only ingress and egress to State College, but the university too. Trust that GPS more than your memory. Have fun!

Edit: if you drive downtown, the parking garages are the way to go.

Thanks for all the information everybody, it’s much appreciated! Sorry for the delay in returning to this topic ad today is my anniversary so we had brunch and whatnot going on today.
Got a hotel room for Altoona Friday night. My wife is usually up by 6:00 and my bladder usually wakes up about that time these days as well so an early departure is not a problem for us if it’s the anticipated noon kickoff (my daughter will sleep walk to the car, then sleep once she gets in). My family told me last night they have a parking pass coming for me as well, so I’ll figure that out when it arrives. Current discussion is for us.to just take Friday off and spend Friday evening walking around campus to get that part in. Surely plans will change as time goes by. Thanks again for the suggestions and advice.

Bring a tent and you and the wife can camp on Mt. Nittany. If the weather cooperates it's really nice up there in the fall. As for your daughter, it's a big school. Surely she knows someone who can put her up at their place for the weekend. But be careful as she may not want to return home.

Alright, I’m heading up on Friday morning at 6:00 stopping at the hotel in Altoona to check in then head to campus. What do you guys think about what to do? My wife wants to walk around campus and check things out but I really have no idea what’s worth heading to other than just wandering around. Any suggestions? Is there a particular area to park to walk the campus? And how about a dinner suggestion? Is there a particular spot that will be lively but not rowdy? I love a good brewery (let’s be honest, after 8-9 hours in the car I’d be happy with a bad brewery) and I think my wife could be good with that as long as it’s not seedy.
As for gameday, looks like out parking pass is in lot 33. Good? Bad? I think we’re probably just going to pack some sandwiches and chips and stuff like that and wander around the tailgates and toss a football around. Is there anything in particular to see on the morning of gameday? Team arrival? Any particular tailgate lot that is more fun to check out than any other?
We’re pretty excited to head up there and we want to squeeze as much in as we can in a short time.

Antifragile on Calder is a pretty fantastic new(ish) local brewery. Conversely The Brewery is strikingly similar to how it was when you were a student. Both are fantastic choices.

You really ought to leave Thrusday and get yourselves over halfway to State College so that you can make it into town for lunch on Friday. There's a Days Inn in Clairsville OH for $48/night with a free breakfast! Amazingly, the reviews are good. Tons of places for less than $100/night from Clairsville to Wheeling.

Downtown parking on Friday's before games fill up fast but if you're there early you should have no problem. There's a small metered lot behind the post office off the alley between Allen and Frazier. If full, pick the Frazier Street garage as it's less busy/congested than the Pugh Street garage. Since you haven't been to campus in long time I'd suggest you eat lunch in the HUB. Your daughter will love it and you'll be amazed at the changes.

As for tailgating, you've been invited to rudedude's in this thread. You'll be parking in lot 33 and he said he'll be in lot 34. You're coming from Kentucky so bring a unique bourban that would be hard to find around here for your contribution. That gives you a home base if you would.

For the creamery there's still 2 separate lines, although they don't start on opposite ends like at the old creamery. Long line by door is cones, on the other side of that line is grocery items. Cones still pay first and then get the cones. Grocery line pick out things first and then bring them up. Tell them you want a bag and how many hours your trip is. Each bag holds I think (6) 1/2 gallon containers of ice cream. The the dry ice lasts way longer than what you need. For example a three hour trip I would tell them one hour and still have dry ice left.

The parking lot you mentioned has a 5 hour max just as an FYI. As for lunch in the HUB, really? It will be packed with students and the food it all typical fast food, like Sbarro, Panda Express, Burger King, etc. I was walking through the HUB at lunch time last week and it was a zoo and lines were long. There are better choices downtown. If you want to eat on Campus, unfortunately Whiskers is closed but Cafe Laura in the Mateer building is not bad. Limited choices each day for lunch, check the menu online to see if it is to your liking. FYI, I think the town you are mentioning in far eastern Ohio is Saint Clairsville.

He has his 11th grade daughter along and she'd probably love eating at the HUB plus it's changed a bunch since he's been there so he'll find it interesting. They also have a nice soup and salad bar with many options.

EDIT: I can't believe I'm defending my suggestion for lunch, smh. Cville, don't you have a meeting with the coach coming up that you'll need to tell us about?

As for tailgating, you've been invited to rudedude's in this thread. You'll be parking in lot 33 and he said he'll be in lot 34. You're coming from Kentucky so bring a unique bourban that would be hard to find around here for your contribution. That gives you a home base if you would.
Great information tioga, thanks.
I would have no issues staying in a Days Inn. On the other hand, I’m not sure my wife would go for it. I may give it a shot though. I’m pretty eager to get the hell out of here and hit the road.

We wanted to take an official tour of the school but there weren’t any available. We may walk through the HUB, but will probably find a spot in town to eat. I’m going to want beer.

Does your daughter have any thoughts on what she might want to major in? You can walk into most of the buildings on campus during the day. If she has some preferences, you could try to swing through that section of campus. Many of the departments will have an undergrad hanging around who will give a tour and a sales pitch if you call and ask. My son did them quite often in Landscape Arch.

I’m local and a retiree, so have been witness to the changes over the last 40 years. I am out of town this weekend or I’d offer to do a personal tour for youall.

Have a great visit. Hope you enjoy and she is impressed!

For something different, I think you could just go to any area (I would recommend Pollock Commons) and eat at the buffet. I think it is technically open to anyone. Lunch is 12.35 a person (visa) includes everything, drinks, desserts including a few flavors of creamery ice cream, no additional tax or tips, but no beer.

@Connorpozlee ,

I can confirm that @rudedude 's offer still stands. He does most of the talking. I do most of the cooking. Since you will be parking in Lot 33, or as we affectionately refer to it as the "Valley of Death" between the hospital and Lot 34, walk up the hill and join us. We're on your way to the stadium. You never know who you might see.

That’s extremely kind, thanks. How will I know this tailgate from the others?

We park along the same fence line. Walk up the dirt road. A row of porta johns will be on the left side of the dirt road. Rolls of garbage bags and recycling bags will be on the right side of the dirt road. We are usually 6 or so cars in on the right side of the dirt road. Blue tent with white PSU chipmunk logo next to a white tent with the shot clock.

Now you and my stalker can find me. ;)

From experience with my youngest granddaughter......(for two years) prior to attending Penn State: registered PA address, license, attended Lake Lehman school district (1st -7th) Alabama (8th-10th) finished back at Lehman 11th-12th). PSU changed their policy on out-of-state requirements the following summer after Sophia graduated from Lehman. She was already accepted by PSU in her senior yr of HS. The college reversed their decision an considered Sophia an o-of-state student. She did graduate in undergrad, pre-law in three yrs. now she is in her first of Law school.

"The Pennsylvania State University's tuition is $18,898 for in-state and $36,476 for out-of-state students. Compared with the national average cost of in-state tuition of $11,286, The Pennsylvania State University is more expensive. For students coming from out of state, the tuition is more expensive than the national average cost of out-of-state tuition of $27,394.

These figures include both tuition and fees, also referred to as the sticker price. Fees differ by institution and may fund library services, student gym facilities, student centers, technology resources and campus health centers.

As you’re comparing costs of different institutions, also consider the total cost and the net price. The total cost is the sticker price, plus the cost of room and board, books and supplies, and transportation and personal expenses. At The Pennsylvania State University, the total cost is $36,484 for in-state students and $54,062 for out-of-state students. The net price is the average cost of the university after aid and scholarship funds are discounted from the total cost, which come in on average at $46,001 for out-of-state students and $28,615 for in-state students receiving need-based aid."

My oldest two are already in college (well, one has graduated and is furthering her education now) so I’m familiar with the financial aspects. It has been much, much less expensive for my daughters to attend private colleges with much higher initial sticker prices than the public schools.

Flying?
Bought a local bottle of bourbon tonight to bring up. Not Pappy, but liked by the local bourbon folks I spoke to. I’m not a bourbon drinker myself, so if we make it over to your tailgate it’s yours for the hospitality.
