The recent movie "Saturday Night" was awesome. I didn't know what to expect going in, but loved that it stuck to the build up to that first episode with Carlin. It was really good and had a terrific cast.

Watching the homecoming musical concert now - so fun and so many memories! Vedder a standout so far.

Couldn’t find the SNL50 version but it’s this and nearly as good (well, sans Petty isn’t going to be as good anyway…):

Love when SNL lets the talent get a bit unhinged. This is a great example.

Eddie Murphy as Tracy Morgan with Morgan next to him was incredible. ‘I will not ingest only three cheeses!!!’

Also surprised how much air Sabrina Carpenter is getting (not that I mind…).

Liked the Tina Fey and Amy Poehler skit as you got to see a lot of past hosts and performers. Had to cringe watching the physical comedy bits. Slamming your body into folding metal chairs has got to do some damage over the years. Black Jeopardy is always a favorite, but other than those nothing really memorable.

Tomorrow night, the first episode, hosted by George Carlin, is being aired.
I'm off to trial in Pittsburgh tomorrow, so this morning while I'm prepping to leave Phila, I just watched that episode and the Albert Brooks film is g-d darn genius.

Well, was hoping to celebrate the show with all the SNL fans here but turns out there aren't many. I know a few, like me, who understood the magnitude of trying to pay tribute to 50 years (think someone said there have been about 884 hosts) of an iconic show with hundreds of cast, musical guests, and skits. Personally, I loved it. Never thought I'd see Eddie Murphy and Tracy Morgan in a sketch; Eddie Murphy and Will Ferrell in a sketch, Bill Murray live on Weekend Update (making a joke about his brother having sex with ScarJo to Colin's face), Lonely Island covering decades with a Digital Short, one of my all time faves', Vanessa Bayer, getting to reprise the 'best friends' WE cameo with Fred Armisen, Brox Beat meet Coffee Talk, Mulaney & Co.'s love letter to Broadway/NYC, etc. Sandler's tribute song to '50 Years' was incredible - should have closed the show. I think the biggest obvious 'missing' cast member was Bill Hader, who reportedly had a long scheduled conflict, but I hear he had insufferable anxiety from the show, so maybe that played a part.

Now, my biggest personal gripe: Miley Cyrus singing the Sinead O'Connor version of 'Nothing Compares 2 U.' Sinead was famously 'banned for life' from SNL after ripping up a picture of the Pope. Miley was in a short lived feud with O'Connor, and this seems to have put it to rest. If this was Miley's choice, I love it. If Lorne's, not so much.

Loved this:

I thought that by showing them again, they were saying that they didn’t care, and see, they’re still funny. They were.
Totally agree. There was plenty of other material to cover so they easily could have ignored all the edgy stuff.

My only complaint is, how can you not include something from the sketch where Eddie Murphy disguises himself as a white guy?

I agree. I realize that once you start to highlight someone, you exclude others. They did show the Belushi cemetery bit though. Maybe they could have had a tribute to lost members and show a montage of Gilda, Norm, Farley, and Hartman and others. Gilda was my fav so I would have liked to see a bit more of her contributions.

I only watched clips of the show, did they show any Mr Bill at all? Mr Bill getting smashed sometimes was the highlight of the show.

I’m a big fan of SNL as a franchise, having first seen it during season 1 as a 14 year old. I still remember that night vividly. Had never heard of the show and caught it randomly while switching channels on the family TV. It was sometime early in the first season that I first watched.

SNL (called Saturday Night that first season) became must watch TV for my buddies and me. ”Jane you ignorant slut”, Killer Bees, Samurai, Mr Bill, the fake commercials…it was all stuff we’d never seen before on TV. I stopped watching while in college - other things to do on Saturday night - but started watching again after college. Then I got married. My wife was a huge SNL fan so we watched it anytime we were home, and would watch on Sunday morning if we missed it the night before.

I stopped watching it regularly after my wife died in 2016. I’ve seen a few episodes since. I think it is still funny, but don’t find it as relatable as I once did.

All that being said, I had circled Sunday night on my calendar. I was really looking forward to watching the show. When it was over I felt that the producers missed a huge opportunity. I get that it’s a live show and you have to work with the available talent, but I was really hoping to see clips of the best skits throughout the years, maybe introduced live by a former cast member of that particular era.

Just my $0.02. Now get off my lawn.

That sounds like a different kind of show though I would love to see something similar. When they try to 'blend' an anniversary show into a season, which is what I think this is, you get a weirder, but more unique, event. When I'm jonesing for old SNL content I just fire up YouTube, noting the episode they dedicated to 'Cowbell' I would love to see for hundreds of my favorite all time skits.

I thought Justin Timberlake was another notable omission for this show. Not a cast member but he's been one of the more memorable hosts/musicians not in terms of his music, but in some of his sketches. In general I thought the sketches were a bit weak. I imagine they were under a ton of pressure to try to deliver their best sketches in a long time and I don't think they accomplished that, but it was still a good special.

I disagree - about the quality of sketches and purpose; of course, humor is subjective, but I think they tried to fit as many former cast members/friends as they could into the sketches.

Timberlake hasn’t been seen much since his DUI…

Overall I enjoyed it. Always glad to get more Eddie. I was surprised we'd get 2 appearances from Sabrina Carpenter...not like she's been an important part of the show's history. Also 2 from Molly Shannon? Just surprised given some of the folks we didn't see at all that they'd get 2.

Most disappointing for me was no Bill Hader. Really thought we'd get a Stefon skit during Weekend Update. From what I understand, Bill's anxiety is pretty awful and seems like he doesn't want to revisit it.

How could SNL overlook one of their smallest yet biggest stars? Mr Bill

He did appear in the 40th anniversary episode.
