I am expecting a highly derivative sequel (like The Force Awakens), but so far very positive...96% on Rotten Tomatoes

Went to see it yesterday. It was very good.best part of movie was seeing Val Kilmer. He was one of my favorite actors for years. Top gun, real genius, tombstone, heat.

Good movie. Cruise was good as was the supporting cast. Fighter scenes better than the original. Cruise was better in this one too. Plot improved imo. Even the Cruise love interest injected into the plot came across ok. Overall, better than the original even though some elements were similar. Fun watch and good to see in the theatre.

"Top Gun: Maverick" director Joseph Kosinski is sharing why original female cast members from "Top Gun" were not invited to participate in the film's sequel.

In an interview with "Insider," Kosinski said he did not consider bringing back Kelly McGills, who played the love interest of Tom Cruise's character, "Maverick" Mitchell and Meg Ryan, who played the wife of Nick "Goose" Bradshaw (played by Anthony Edwards).

"Those weren't stories that we were throwing around," he said.

The new movie touches on the 1986 blockbuster with the return of original cast member Val Kilmer as Tom "Iceman" Kazansky a new storyline featuring Maverick training Goose's son, "Rooster" Bradshaw, portrayed by Miles Teller.

"I didn't want every storyline to always be looking backwards," Kosinski explained. "It was important to introduce some new characters."
I love how they have been trying to force the narrative of age appropriate women forced out of the film. They act as if Meg Ryan had a significant role. What was she in maybe two scenes?

McGillis (6 years Cruise's senior) is a little different but if they play Cruise as a giant screw up she would have lost patients with him in the real world. It isn't as if they grabbed a 20 year old as his love interest. Connelly is only 8 years younger than Cruise.
