Until we won the 1971 ACC Basketball tournament, Maryland's 1958 squad was the only non-big-4 team to have done so. The "some reason" is that College Park did invest in hoops during the 1950s, but backed off a bit to strengthen academics on campus in the early 1960s.

UVA, USC, and Clemron invested very little in their hoops programs until the mid 1960s.

Press Maravich (Pistol Pete's dad) had taken the Taters to the 1962 tournament finals; they lost to Wake.
Everett Case can calling for Press to be his assistant shortly thereafter. And Case offered more $$$ as his assistant than AD Frank Howard was paying him. Howard made no effort to keep him. Self-imposed basketball chump school.

Fans around the league went beserk all the time at all games. USC was not singled out.

The Big Four had no problem with Maryland's competitiveness. They had no problem with USC's either. The problem was with Frank McGuire. He was considered a "troublemaker" in league circles, and resigned from UnCarolina under pressure.

Think about it. A coach who wins you a national title you force to resign? I've stated before - we were in the crossfire between McGuire and the ACC.

And keep in mind that it was Dietzel, not McGuire, who pushed for ACC secession. Wish instead we had sent "Pepsodent Paul" back to West Point or Baton Rouge.
Interesting perspective. Maryland had some great players over the years. I went to a few games up there as I had relatives in the area. I disagree that USC wasn't at least a notch higher on the Hate-O-Meter but its all opinion. I've never seen anything like the emotion of the last 2 ACC finals with the Roche and Owens teams at USC. I'm sure McGuire was a catalyst for the emotion. He was not a fan of the NC Royalty. Yes on Dietzel getting us out of the league. McGuire was strongly opposed. That was a dangerous move at the time and could have been disastrous if we had not made it into the SEC.

McGuire was part of that NC Royalty.

One of the ways he irritated the ACC administration was his very vocal opposition to the ACC tournament, stating that if you come in first after a grueling 14-game league schedule, you deserve to go dancing (i.e., the only ACC school to go dancing that year) and not have to prove yourself again in a three-night version of Russian Roulette. To his credit, he stated this while coaching both at Chapel Hill and Columbia. And of course, it bit him (and all of USC) in the butt in 1970.

While ideally I agree with McGuire's opinion, the commissioner's office can't like a coach from a member school criticizing the league's biggest money maker and source of publicity,

I've stated on previous posts that it's worth getting your hands on a couple of books to understand USC's role and perspective vis a vis the ACC:

He should repeat what he just said in the video to the Charlotte area kids who choose UNC or NCSU in regards to BIG SOLD OUT STADIUMS with SEC TEAMS being played.

This year was light in the Charlotte area. We did get Judge Collier from Rock Hill...The two misses that I wish we would've gotten was the running back that signed with OU and Chris Peal that signed with UGA...next year, the state of NC will have 6-7 four or five stars and then the rest 3 stars. The quarterback for Providence Day and 2 WR's from that school in the NC top 10. I don't see us hitting hard in NC except for that Linebacker from Asheville (battle between UT/Clemson) and WR's from the Charlotte area.

UNC/NCSU will have to recruit Virginia and Georgia hard this next recruiting cycle. Would love to see us, and Virginia Tech take over the Tideward/Maryland area...
It wasn't light.... there are 2 and no star guys who are D1 players all around that area. The star rankings mean something...but not everything. Not many states with more undiscovered talent than NC. Our best two recruiting classes ever had significant NC players involved. They've always been there, and will continue to be there. DMV recruitment is fine...esp. with SB's connections up there....but NC is ALMOST as important as GA area recruiting and I would argue as important as SC. For fifty years Tennessee, Clemson, Georgia and Florida has skipped on through to handpick most of the best talent. Some goes to UNC and State annually too - but it's one of the last unclaimed areas that we could be putting our flag down. SOS talked about being in NC and it helped him immensely.

The Charlotte area (the diamond area from Shelby to Indian Trail and Mooresville to Rock Hill) is as rich an area for recruits as almost any in the country....and it's about 75-100 minutes away from Columbia. We should have two coaches camped out there annually even if we don't visit other parts of the state as much.
