Let's do it!

"We have a super coaching staff in place," Mainieri said. "I feel great and energized, I can't wait to get started working with the players, and let's get this University of South Carolina baseball program back to where it belongs - in Omaha and in the College World Series."

Mainieri also announced the retention of associate head coach/hitting coach Monte Lee and the additions of pitching coach/recruiting coordinator Terry Rooney and assistant coach John Hendry.

Hendry currently on Virginia staff playing in Omaha, resume reads like good hire.

USC also hired pitching coach/recruiting coordinator Terry Rooney, who worked with Mainieri from 2007-08 and recruited many players who contributed to a 2008 College World Series finish and the 2009 national championship. Rooney has spent the past two seasons back at LSU as associate director of program development and recruiting, where he helped build another national championship team in 2023.

Just watch! This is going to be fun! Like I saw someone else say we basically hired the next best thing to Ray Tanner, a tough no-nonsense baseball guy! I'll be interested to see how much fun he lets them have in the dugout, I mean it's a game and you want them to have fun, but it will just be interesting how much leeway and old school guy is willing to give!

He's old, but the man knows baseball. I don't think it's nearly as much of an issue as it would be to hire a 66 year old football coach. Just apples and oranges.

One advantage is that he's deeply connected in the sport.

Agree. Well respected by players, coaches, fans and other managers.

I like that one of the first things Ray mentions is how much he has helped his former player become better players. That's been MIA here for a long time. And it should be the highest priority.

"What I've carried with me in my entire coaching career is it's not about me, it's not about prestige, publicity, even winning games and the love of the game. It's all about the players.
"They don't create baseball programs so that I can have a place to work or Ray Tanner has a place to work, they have them on college campuses so that gifted baseball players will have a place to develop their talents to their fullest potential and learn lessons they will use later on in their life." - Paul Mainieri.
