The AD by agreeing to renegotiate the contract (by extending the time but reducing the buyout) made it a lot more difficult for the president, BOT or legislature to complain and veto getting rid of Martin. Everyone knew that Martin had to have 4 years on a contract to recruit....take advantage of it. The AD did a helluva job.
Given his roster turnover every year, does he really? šŸ˜‰

I mean, how much different would starting over from scratch look from any other year?
IMO, none.....which is why I'm glad that as of April 1 we don't have as big of a hurdle to upset the BOT or the SC legislature.

I am not a Martin apologist....never wanted to hire him in the first place, was willing to give him a chance after the FF to see if he could build on it....he didn't and it's past the time for him to go.....would have been done last year but for the BOT and the legislature.

.....and it would have cost us a lot more financially under the then exiisting contract to get rid of him at the end of this year or next. Which would you rather have???
I'd rather have the renegotiated contract. That wasn't my point. My point was there is a cost to keeping a coach who has reached his expiration date.

But I have questions about all of this after tonight. Where was this fight against UT at home?

Agree he is well past his expirations date. Should've been gone last year, but you can thank the SC legislature and the BOT and to some extent the then president for that not happening. From what I've heard, he has one or two or more on the board the really like him and blew those discussions up last year as the prospective buyout got leaked to the legislature prior to the University's request for a medical school funding grant and Jackson and Lourie made hay of it.

. I can't explain Martin's coaching....so I have no clue where our fight was against UT.

Admittedly, I don't tune in for our games, so I can't tell if there's anything subjective that we're doing better (effort, heart, desire, etc). However, through 11 conference games last year, we were 3-8. This year we're 4-7. Of course, last year our record was blamed on us being decimated by covid. If not for that, it was presumed we'd have been much better. But we're only marginally better this year, at least on paper. Is there reason to believe this squad can round into form for next year?

I'm not strongly pro- or anti-Frank. I think it's obvious that we're about as good as we're ever going to be under him, but maybe we're as good we can ever reasonably expect to be. Two or 3 years ago I was hepped on firing him, but I'm pretty indifferent now.
Is that you Ray Tanner????
