Excuse my ignorance but I thought it as agreed upon for the championship games to rotate between the three Universities and Jackson but it seems Starkville has been skipped over quite a bit. What's the deal?

They really like the turf field at USM, and I think the Hattiesburg Chamber ponies up money to help recruit the events. Not sure if Starkville/Oxford Chambers did or didnt.

I don't think there ever was a long term agreement about where to have it. I have heard that MSU is not keen on hosting it.

This would be a great event for Jackson State's new stadium to host, if that ever happens.

Let's face it, Ole Miss and Mississippi State (and really USM, all jokes aside) are really too big. Playing in a big, empty stadium with no atmosphere sucks. It was that way at the Vet too.

So for now, USM is the best we got. Warmer weather down there too, generally, this time of year.

USM is by far the best venue for hosting the state championships. I'm just surprised no one has mentioned or thought of Alcorn's Jack Sprinks Stadium as another alternative. It has a 22,500 seat capacity, berm areas, plenty of parking, and they've even got an RV lot there.

Alcorn is pretty remote location to hold an event like this. Jackson would be the obvious location if it didnt suck so bad.

We were due to host it in 2020 and they had to be moved to Jackson due to the SEC’s revised schedule giving us a home game that weekend. Ironically that game got rescheduled due to COVID contact tracing so nothing happened at DWS that weekend.

I think we hosted in 2014 and 2016 and haven’t hosted since.

So is Hattiesburg, if you live in the northern part of the state.
Hattiesburg is closer and easier to get to than Alcorn for most everyone. And is much better able to host thousands of visitors.

True, but Hattiesburg is still a long way from the northern parts of the state. Then again, so is Jackson. I wish the rotation could have been worked out.

Jackson's about 3 hours from Pascagoula too, about the same as from Southaven or Tupelo. It would be by far the best site if it didn't suck so bad. If not Jackson, it should rotate Hattiesburg, Starkville, Hattiesburg, Oxford, repeat. And it has been in Oxford as recently as last year.

Do they have adequate motel accommodations, etc. for an event like that? Seems like a rather remote location.

My experience has been different. For the last decade or so Auburn and Alabama rotated hosting the championship games for all classifications. I've been to four of them - two in each place. It was awesome, other than my team losing three of the four I went to. With the advent of the 12 team playoff, both schools have pulled out of the agreement with the thought they may be hosting a playoff game (oops), so this year the games move to the new stadium at UAB.

Why not Mississippi College? Perfect size venue, middle of the state ect.

UAB stadium is the perfect place for the AL championship games.

Used to be there, back in the 90s. I remember watching the 3A title game there in I believe 1992. Don't know when they moved it, but it was between then and 1996.

That stadium is probably a little too small nowadays.

It's pretty much a high school stadium. Picayune played there in '86, but it's too small. Maroon Tide Nation can fill up the whole lower half of MM Roberts without any issues.

There was talk about trying to include some of the other college stadium in the state - Troy, Jax State, etc. Or maybe rotate with the Crampton Bowl in Montgomery.

Are you telling me that Picayune’s stadium seating capacity is more than 9,000? I doubt it’s even half that. Also, no need to worry about Picayune filling up MM Roberts this year ha. Although having only 12 6a schools in the south has made the path a lot easier, especially when only a couple or few out of that are ever any good.

Just because a town is named Picayune doesn’t mean that their numbers are picayune… **

I never even mentioned our stadium, and no we are not playing our High School State Championships in High School Stadiums. Robinson-Hale is included in that bubble along with all JUCO stadiums as well.

Yes, I've been there. It couldn't host, but it' not that much farther away from north Mississippi than Hattiesburg.
Problem is, the only central site sucks. Only other real options are USM, MSU & UM. They played in Oxford last year & Hattiesburg this year. Apparently, for some reason we don’t seem to really want it in Starkville. Not sure what else MHSAA can do.
