For those that dont want to click, the info below is from the NYT article.

MSU got $150MM in federal funding in 2023, which accounted for almost half of the university's total research budget.
The threats to this funding are concerning enough that community and Mississippi State University leaders in Starkville, one of the smallest cities in the Southeast with a major research institution, have been discussing the potential consequences. The university’s research has led to economic growth in the state and helped bring several aerospace companies to the area. In fiscal year 2023, the school spent more than $150 million in federal research funding.

It remains to be seen which programs might be affected by cuts, and what it might mean in turn for Starkville. Already, an aquaculture research project at the university intended to improve food security in Africa and Asia, which was funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development, has been paused.

Speaking of Stennis and Sonny Montgomery...

It's both wild and telling that with all of the two-bit, no 'count, dirt bag Ole Miss politicians this state has seen, perhaps the two most universally loved and respected Mississippi politicians are MSU men.
They put Mississippi and the nation ahead of their political party - every 17n time!

And that's the difference.

True

That said, I’ll give Ole Miss credit for Cochran & Winter

I’ll also throw in Haley. I never really thought that a Lobbyist would make a good Governor but Mississippi needed him during Katrina

That needs to be cut. It's pretty much mostly waste and fraud so I hope Elon just slashes and burns. We can always turn the dairy into a raw milk farm to make up the difference.*** I remember how conservative Mississippi politicians who served for years were actually quite beneficial to State and to MS by bringing home lots of bacon.

Gonna be a lot of folks changing their tune on MAGA once it affects them…
Immature, narcissistic, and narrow-viewed people will, yes.

Just like a lot of people will keep voting for shiitty politicians that leave destruction in their wake, as long as they keep getting a check every month.

Selfishness is one of humanity's greatest weaknesses.

I'm sure nobody cares what I think but spending tax payer money on food security in Africa and Asia wouldn't be at the top of my list. How about food security in urban and rural areas in America? Or Mexico? Or Central America? Or Canada? Let's put our oxygen mask on first.

why does a private university get public money?
This is a valid question in general.
It kills the school voucher argument if you firmly subscribe to the idea.

As for universities getting public money for research, private institutions have done research which has led to new medicine, new technology, new weapons, etc.

Not really, it will be people that are suffering after disasters. There’s only a few states that are equipped to truly handle a natural or man made disasters and MS isn’t one of them.

We will see in a few years. Trump left true destruction in his wake in 2020 and 2021. No matter how you view things, that was an inarguable FACT. It was chaos.

I do like Cochran, and I personally really like Winter. He's pretty polarizing locally though.

Haley had a really nice run and then flushed his legacy down the toilet with those pardons. Inexplicable.

Why the 17 is the federal government paying for this? We have our own issues to deal with.

Food security is a good thing

A steady food supply can mean more peace

I suspect it's not much money and yes people can think that's a waste of taxpayer money. I get the principle of it but it's not even a rounding error in our massive federal budget. But we're also competing with China around the world and the Chinese are buying influence and friends. It's good to have friends and allies around the world and it's good if China doesn't.

The problem is we don’t have the money to win friends and influence people. Check out the debt… and I’m all for trying to influence other countries…it’s a conundrum

Truly. Never in a billion years did I think you could legitimately get dumber.

Stopping that won't put a dent in the debt. Even doge is realizing it's not saving much by firing people. I'm not saying that's a good way to spend money because I don't know anything about the program. It's just that those things bother people because "we have homeless vets and we're spending money on yada, yada, yada..." Sometimes it's a lot cheaper than what the future holds for not spending a little money around the world earning good will.

The difference is China is building infrastructure, something people see and appreciate, we've lost the influence game.
