What year was it when we called a run play right at Godzilla incarnate Chase Young with the game on the line?

I’ll just enjoy the win and ride for now - but beating Purdue shouldn’t be cause for a ticker tape parade. Auburn will be a much better test for the team. Cheers!
Where did I say it was cause for a ticker tape parade? Merely said it wasn’t pretty but given that it was an opening game on the road it was a good win.

You do realize Clifford outplayed O’Connell? All I’m reading is about how great AOC was. He completed 50% of his passes and one TD. Cliff completed 54% and 4 tds. Yeah he threw the puke six, but how many people would have packed it in like some of you did, blame others, or wallow in self-pity? I get he may not be a franchise qb, but he showed a ton of moxie (old coach’s phrase) leading them to victory. And I’ll take a 4 TD to 1 interception ratio all day

I did see #33 on the field and without a roster sheet, did not know who it was. DDS I assume?
Yes... thanks (I re-watched and didn't see him so i appreciate your vision). Was hoping we'd see him if we were also seeing Carter.

I guess I'd be in that group after the Illinois game last year. I didn't stay up to watch so I watched yesterday afternoon. I agree that the coaches did well Thursday night. I especially liked the more aggressive defense after giving up the 3rd TD. In a pressure late game situation why allow the offense to get comfortable? D-Backs playing right up on the line of scrimmage at the snap. I loved it. I do think the offense needs to play more with the QB under center. It's the best way to establish a balanced offense which this team has been sorely lacking. There weren't any field goal attempts, but otherwise I was impressed with the kicking game. Bottom line: A good win on the road at night against a 9-win team from last year. And yes, Franklin deserves credit.
The DB's at the LOS were the reason O'donnell was only 52% and not 72. Most teams allow the cushion and he plays pitch and catch and waits til CB's venture up before taking his shot. We are tough and physical and capable of close coverage, so that disrupted his game a good bit. I only worry that all the hands we placed on Purdue receivers will be called when we play msu, um, osu who have even better athletes with more speed. We'll see.

Very good win... let's see how it translates in weeks ahead.

  • Where was Mustipher? I thought he was an elite DT. He was invisible all game. Stats show he had 1 tackle.
  • I think Elsdon will be phased out as the season progresses. Fine young man. Hard worker. Smart. Not fast enough nor athletic enough to play at this level.
  • The team has the potential to improve a lot as the season progresses. Many young, inexperienced but very talented players.
  • This may be the best group of defensive backs that Penn State has ever had.
  • The two freshmen RBs really look talented. They will be special as time goes on.
  • This is a rebuilding year, except at QB - the most important position. That is a problem because next year we could be very solid except we will be rebuilding at QB. Franklin really has to play Allar a lot this year even if it means risking a loss or two.
Mustipher has not played in over a year. Still rusty. It will take several games to restart and return to previous level of play. That was a nasty injury he sustained and he needs to regain confidence in his ability to use his leg strength.
Agree about Allar needing increased PT for two reasons: Clifford is injury prone and he needs experience for 2023.

Disagree. It’s the players. Purdue routinely fields recruiting classes ranked 70 or worse. They’ve had one class in the Top 30 the past five years (26) and two ranked 72. Others in the 50s. We should blow the doors off Purdue but coaching is why we don’t.
So? PSU is 10-0 vs. PU since 2005.

DDS murdered an OL on the same play Carter got ejected. He legitimately looks like our most physically imposing DE already. I think we'll see him more as the year goes on.

I'm just tired of the blame for a loss but no credit for a win game that is so prevalent here. It reeks of hyphypocrisy
How much credit we talkin' here for beating a team that we out-recruit and out-talent by a very wide margin?

Road wins are never gimmes, but forgive me for feeling we should not need last minute heroics to beat the likes of Purdue.

It's still BS that Franklin would have been crucified for losing yet some are "ho-hum, we recruit better, should win by 30" when we do win.

The game was closer than i would have liked, but there was no confidence to be found for this PSU team prior to kickoff. The game played out like many expected. I hope Purdue finishes strong and that the win looks better long term.

The 2018 Ohio State team says hi. I'm sure they out recruited PU.

2018 another year PSU should have beaten OSU.

Their many, many B1G Championships and CFP appearances can give them comfort when absolute anomalies like happen then…
Just making sure that everyone remembers that a vastly superior Ohio St. team who recruits 10x better than Purdue went into Purdue at night and lost, badly.
In watching some of the games, so far today, there are some vastly superior teams who recruit 10x better than their opponents that are struggling. The "anomalies" continue.;)

Feel free to list them today! Be sure to include recruiting rankings - like I did. ;)

Are you kidding? I'm on my 3rd Margarita, no way I'm doing homework. 🤣
But for laughs and a good time tune into the Iowa game. I love seeing them suck and so far their offense is a mess and their fans are loudly booing them. Their defense on the other hand looks good and is going to win this game for them. But those bitching about Clifford need to look at Petras. Oooof.

Iowa - 30s
SDSU - only 63 schollys, FCS school.

Funny hearing about a Iowa kid whom Iowa didn't offer making a fumble recovery and getting the back story.

See the transfer portal for the reason recruiting rankings do not mean much

Don't kid yourself. It wouldn't matter who we beat or under what circumstances. Some of our fans just can't live with any success by CJF.

mustipher coming off an injury that it took a year to come back from. he played an outstanding game. he logged the most plays of any dl and graded higher than the rest by a good amount. the more he plays, the better he'll get. i'll take that kind of an effort all day every day.

True - but we still have better talent; by a mile.
By a mile? Totally disagree with that statement. Stars on high school players indicate potential. Performance in actual college games is the true indicator of talent.

How could that be? Al Gore hadn’t had a chance to invent the internet yet.

Regarding Mustipher, DT's don't usually get a lot of tackles even if they play very well, unless they happen to get to the QB for sacks which most do not do. With it being the first game and the end of Summer the substitutions/rotations were such that Mustipher didn't get the snaps he likely will against Michigan and oh-high-ya. He will likely make more of an impact as the season goes along and he rounds into form.

When I watched Elsdon play (slowly....) it made me wonder how good King could be if he couldn't beat Elsdon out. I'm hoping that they put Carter at Mike and that by midseason he is PSU's starting Mike LB. We need a real thumper in the middle that sets the tone for the defense, not a weak (in quickness and tackling) player that can only make the basic plays. Carter looks the part even sitting on the bench trying to figure out why he got thrown out!!!
I think to reason Elsdon was starting was that he had a better understanding of the defensive calls and positioning according to Franklin's comments. Perhaps against Ohio PSU will go with Kobe King to start. I think he is more athletic.

That’s why Monday morning coaches are never wrong…it’s easy to second guess after the game is over.

More like Friday morning. Looking forward to more commentary like this going forward. I’ll be here….

Good thing there aren’t any any analysis of high school rating compared to college performance then.

I saw a lot of Wednesday morning coaching this past week and it was pretty much all wrong.
