  • 24-team CFP
  • 9 conference champion auto-bids
  • 15 at-large bids
  • seeded by Strength of Record*
  • first two rounds on campus (top 16 seeds get exactly one home game)
  • third and fourth rounds: Peach, Fiesta, Orange, Cotton, Rose, and Sugar (rotate)
  • National Championship Game: rotate among premier football venues
*-Reflects chance that an average Top 25 team would have team's record or better, given the schedule.

Example based on current SOR and projected conference champions:

8 teams. 5 bids to highest ranked conference champions. Projected 1st round matchups:

9-2 Arizona St at 11-0 Oregon
10-1 Boise at 10-1 Ohio St
10-1 Miami at 10-1 Texas
10-1 Notre Dame at 10-1 Penn St.

Of course Georgia or SMU could get in by winning their conference championship. Everyone else, sorry.

That’s ridiculous. You’re screwing the good conferences.

Conference championships need to go way down in value.

I like it alright. I’d make them all bowl games though.

Plus, 24 more closely resembles the amount of teams that make the playoff in all other levels of college ball.

I’m fine with 12. The only thing I would change is conference championships get you a bid into the playoff and not a bye. The best 4 teams that are decided on by the committee get byes. The rest of the field is laid out like the selection committee does for March madness. Higher seeded teams get home games in the first round.

Byes or guaranteed seeds for conference champions has got to go. It messes up the brackets.

I think a lot of different stakeholders would see my format as an improvement. The exception might be the Big Ten because the current format benefits that top heavy league.

I propose 11 game regular season with no conference championship games. The top 16 teams get thrown into group play, 4 pods with 4 teams each similar to the World Cup. These games would be played on campus. Top 8 teams out of the group play would then go to the single elimination bracket. These games would be played at the group of 6 bowls.
