Day 2 musings:
--Hooray and kudos to Youtube TV for creating the multiviewer on their platform for this week. Both tonight and last night, I had all 4 games going on the screen at the same time. They're getting that ready for when they take over Sunday Ticket in the fall.
--It's so funny how there are so many Power 5/6 conference coaches who get lauded year in and year out for being 'great coaches'. Matt Painter was constantly mentioned as one, especially with what Purdue did this regular season. But your mark is made in the Tournament and Painter and his team have come up small each of the last 3 years. I'm not sure how you can have a guy like Edey and not have him make sure he touches the ball on every possession, especially when you're in the double bonus. That and he knew FDU pressed if he watched any of that game against Texas Southern. Purdue looked like they had zero clue how to handle a press.
--Speaking of presses, there were two other teams that melted down as soon as they saw a press -- Drake and Memphis. It was surprising to see Drake do it since they're usually a good ballhandling team. But Memphis's debacle again stems from bad coaching. Anyone who thinks Penny is a good coach is kidding themselves. Dusty May drew up the perfect play at the end and *shocker* they went to the basket when down by 1. Funny how that works when you don't settle for a chucked 3.
--Kent read, Kent write, Kent make a layup, Kent defend the lane. I didn't expect that one.
--Oh look, Bobby Hurley's team choked away another opportunity. Couldn't happen to a nicer coach.
--Iowa State-Pitt was brought to us by Home Depot and Ryobi Tools with a special informercial spot from Habitat for Humanity. Wow, that was tough to watch.
--I have rules on final possession -- if it's tied, go to the basket...if you're down 1, go to the basket...if you're down 2, go to the basket and kick for 3 only if wide open. Why? Because of the chance to get contact and get to the line and too many times there's dribble dribble ball screen dribble chuck at the horn. Both Florida Atlantic and TCU got it right on their final possessions down by 1 and tied, respectively.
--I'll be at the 2 Orlando games on Saturday. I've been to 18 NCAA Tournament games and 15 of them were decided by double digits. We'll see if I can buck my trend.
