When you are employed by a company and the owner or board decides to close your department they don’t discuss it with you beforehand.

I mean, yeah. But those people would also feel blindsided. Especially if it was a high ranking person in the company.

Coordinators: the average salary is $71,589. The range is $121,935 to $41,000.

Other assistants: The average salary of assistants beyond coordinators is $34,204. The range is $106,319 to $2,000.

Below high D1, college coaching is not as lucrative as most would think.

He's not listed as one of their top 13 highly compensated employees in their Form 990. The list goes down to $137,337. So looks like he made less than that.

Well, he doesn’t work for a traditional company. They certainly don’t need to discuss it with him before making the decision, but ideally they would break the news to him in a way that allows him to tell the team directly before it goes public. It's November, so I would assume his team is on campus, so maybe that's exactly what they did. If they had a workout or something scheduled, they may have given him the news before hand so that he could break it to them at the workout.

But if they didn't know the team was going to be together, a few hours is not enough time. Even if they didn't trust him to keep the news quiet, they could have told him schedule a team meeting and then give him the news an hour or two ahead of the meeting so he could then give it to them. Certainly not the biggest deal and it's not like hearing it in person would really make it any easier to swallow, but would have been the better route.
