A diamond in the rough. At this point we should not be fooled that Franklin is going to make a hire of someone nearly nobody was talking about in the lead-up. Hope he finds a lot of success at PSU in development and recruiting.
Is he related to Festus Hagans from Gunsmoke?Wa-who?
This makes me believe the 'firing' of Stubbs was for recruiting.I like the Tidewater, Virginia area of recruiting emphasis. Lots of talent in those high schools.
Yeah, he grew up and played ball in the adjacent city I live in - Hampton. You have a major point on the Tidewater talent.I like the Tidewater, Virginia area of recruiting emphasis. Lots of talent in those high schools.
Well I am sure they will let us know their thoughts; in fact, some already have.I remember him as QB at UVA.
But I am a little disappointed CJF did not run this decision past the BWI Legion of Coaching Excellence for approval. That will be discussed during his annual performance review.

Wow, they got him a PSU shirt and hat pretty quickly. Definitely shows that the move was in the works for a bit.
Thats cuz its UVA....if they were a perennial Top25 I bet he would have a better track record...remember these kids now a days are Front Runners...Went back and checked UVA recruiting since 2012 and they’ve only recruited on four star (the rest are three star and lower). Have to hope the Penn State brand will help elevate things for him a bit…
Well honestly how difficult is that position to coach? Run there, catch the ball, run some more, do happy dance.I remember him as QB at UVA.

Disclaimer; To all the hyper serious, humorless readers, the above is sarcasm. God, what a guy has to do to make a post without being crucified.

So UVa would be a great fit in the BIg10 along with Rutgres and Northwestern??UVA fans haven't had lofty expectations since Al Groh was hired in 2001. Losing Hagans is just another blow to a program that has been mired in mediocrity or worse most of the time, before and after.

C'mon, let's be honest....nobody loses like RutgresSo UVa would be a great fit in the BIg10 along with Rutgres and Northwestern??

Is it true he left Virginia because the academics are better here?
Only in your mindHe may turn out to be awesome and hopefully so, but on the surface this seems like an underwhelming hire.
Gattis for 4 yearsWent back and checked UVA recruiting since 2012 and they’ve only recruited one four star (the rest are three star and lower). Have to hope the Penn State brand will help elevate things for him a bit…they’ve had a couple 1,000 yard receivers in the past few years (looks like one kid may have been a portal player) so that’s promising.
I think this is the fourth or fifth WR coach Franklin has had since he’s been here so maybe he should just rent for the time being…
Now here’s an interesting question. Which one of these guys would you rehire? My vote goes for Hand. Not that he was a great coach, but I loved his food recipes. Okay, you guys can be realistic if you want.Gattis for 4 years
Then Corley and Parker each for a cup of coffee
Then Stubblefield for 3 years
Now the guy from UVA
5 in 9 years probably not all that far from the norm for college coaches anymore.
Breakdown for PSU under CJF:
OC (5 different ones) - Donovan (also TE), Moorhead (also QB), Rahne (also QB), Ciarrocca (also QB), Yurcich (also QB)
DC (3) - Shoop (also Safeties), Pry (also LB), Diaz (also LB)
QB (5) - Rahne, Moorhead, Rahne II, Ciarrocca, Yurcich
RB (2) - Huff (also ST), Seider
WR (5) - Gattis, Corley, Parker, Stubblefield, Hagans
OL (3) - Hand, Limegrover, Trautwein
TE (4) - Donovan, Rahne, Bowen, Howle
DL (2) - Spencer, Scott
LB (2) - Pry, Diaz
CB (1) - Smith
S (3) - Shoop, Banks, Poindexter
ST (3) - Huff, Lorig (when NCAA went to 10 man staffs), Collins (also OLB)
Real good summary thanks. The Bisquet is hungry and needing a change of scenery. Obviously Coach James wants to dominate recruiting in VA like Joe did NJ; I liked the comments in this string that if we can dominate PA, NJ and DMV as we should, we can compete year in, year out.Gattis for 4 years

Sean Spencer. Scott has done ok with DL but it seemed like Spencer had them at another level. Now here’s an interesting question. Which one of these guys would you rehire? My vote goes for Hand. Not that he was a great coach, but I loved his food recipes. Okay, you guys can be realistic if you want.
Agree. Wasn't a fan of the "Wild Hog" thing, but he seemed to get solid productivitySean Spencer. Scott has done ok with DL but it seemed like Spencer had them at another level.
It should be noted that Hagans will be the new Offenive Recruiting Coordinator as well, a sign that CJF trusts his recruiting abilities.Gattis for 4 years
