Someone needs to be brave and just say, "In major college football, if you lose to a far inferior team - no matter how early in the season - you don't go to the playoff."

That loss for them is MORE than embarrasing. They should be OUT of the playoff conversation.

The loss they took was bad, and it is not ameliorated by the schedule they have played, either. They have avoided a true heavyweight battle the entire season. The teams on their schedule that used to be formidable are bad to terrible.

HA....... 90% of the reason to expanding to a 12 team playoff was to *ENSURE* Noodle Lame got in almost every year with their continuous, year after year, cup cake schedule.

Depending on the time of day, I don't know which team I hate worse: Clemmons or Noodle Lame. They are both pathetic.

Couldn't someone reasonably also say that if a team lost to the team that had a bad loss then it was also out of consideration?

Well, this was the inherent problem with playoff expansion all along. I don't care what anyone says, it does absolutely diminish the importance of the regular season. In the old days, a loss like that would instantly take you out of the national title discussion. Now, it really doesn't matter.

For most P5 teams, no single game really matters. Used to be if you lost a game early in the season, you knew you were walking the narrowest of tight ropes the rest of the way and could not afford a single misstep. If you lost your first game late in the season, that might be enough to do you in. But now teams with an early season loss still have wiggle room and a second loss isn't seen as devastating.

When the men’s basketball team lost to North Florida the first game of the year pundits were saying, “this is a bad loss and will hurt them come tournament time”. How is the first game of the year so important when you play a 30 game schedule? However, when you lose a game like ND did to NIL with only 12 game schedule it doesn’t move the needle as much. Can you imagine how far South Carolina would have fallen if ranked 6th in the country and lost to Wofford?
Only ND gets a free pass and I’m surprised other schools aren’t voicing their displeasure.

Good question. Pro CFP folks always cite the NCAAT as support for a playoff. The NCAAT committee closely scrutinizes the quality of wins and losses, though, looking at Quad W/L record. For ND, that FIU game would be a bad Quad 4 loss and make them the only team in the CFP discussion with a Quad 4 loss. I agree, losses of that magnitude should be disqualifying.

All it does is give irrefutable, concrete evidence that the regular season doesn't matter as much after expansion.

I think they should be eliminated if they lose one more game but I still think they get in for some reason. They love ND

ND loss is bad, but disqualifying ?
I'm not harping on you with this comment but your question triggered a thought that I have verbally told many people over the years about ND....it goes like this:

"ND could lose 120 games in a row for a solid decade and they'd STILL be ranked top 25 in the preseason the following year."

The "media darlings" hype is real and disgusting and that's the reason I despise them. I hope they lose 400-0 in the first round.

ND is the reason 6 wins are required to be bowl eligible. Bowls would extend invitations to ND no matter what their record is.

How much does winning your conference title matter? Oh yeah, ND hoodwinked the ACC on that one.
