I made this exact argument earlier in the day.

I'm generally of the mind that non-starters do not OWE the opponent anything. If I'm riding the bench, and then I finally get to go in, I don't want to lay down. I want to play! And it's the obligation of the opposing team to stop me.

That being said: there's 4 seconds left in the game, and you're up by infinity. I've seen you take a knee before, JF! So, the question isn't really answered: what was different this time, compared to other times?
I believe his last statement answered that. Point differential in the age of 12 team playoffs and trying to get the highest seed possible.

I really let that kind of bs get into my head. Character flaw, I guess.
The announcers knew that Maryland didn't have much of a chance. The longer Maryland stayed in the game, the easier their job will be. I don't blame them for talking it up at that point.

Differenece was MD. Franklin has a deep grudge against MD for not honoring their commitment to make him head coach when Friedgen retired. Not sure what the deal is with Locksley unless he was somehow connected with that move (they were both MD assistants at that time).

I don’t think they got along very well then and I have heard that Locksley badmouths Franklin on the recruiting trail. Obviously, Franklin has caught wind of that.

Locks was chirping something . James wasn’t having any of it .

I think James is losing his patience as he gets older. Remember when he yelled at some kid who was trash talking him after the OSU loss? In this case he's hearing it from Locksley and he's not about to let it go.

speaking of the transfer portal, I find it kind of funny that there are a bunch of Ohio St mercenary players who were just brought in mere months ago and still feel the need to violently defend the tOSU logo on "their" field

With the transfer portal, I think you have to let the 2nd teamers play, not just run out the clock.
IDK, kind of maybe? But honestly doubt those 4 seconds are going to be the tipping point of should I stay or should I go. (apologies to The Clash).
I think its more for the idiot media that only look at scores (looking at you Booger) and those that made "style Points a thing) Looking at well all of them.
Also and this may be the biggest part. Franklin doesn't like Locksley and Locksley's mouth was writing checks he couldn't cash.
Locks has a history and being the season its a long and ponderous one.

Thats probably some of it but I think there's more to it. Locks has a habit of, when he's not stuffing his mouth, shooting it off and making snide comments about Franklin and PSU and then being stupid enough to think there wouldn't be blow back.
