Sure, but under vastly different circumstances. And for the "teams have been paying players since the 1960s crowd", yeah... but not like this and not with this damn near absence of rules to include the portal
The portal is the big change. Paying players has always happened.

big difference between getting parents a job, buying a car and having a agent negotiate a million dollar contract. The former situation could be reasonably competitive for most P4 schools and there were ncaa investigative bodies to prevent it from becoming too overt.

now there is no way to compete with open million dollar contracts negotiated by an agent with mega money blue bloods.

obvious difference

Yep, we are spending every last cent it appears on football nil and will likely go 0-8 again , it would take just a small % of that to push basketball or baseball over the top. If Jans had two more key players, especially a strong scoring guard with size , we would be there.
We're not spending much on football NIL. Very few of our signees (high school, JUCO, or transfer) had any other P4 offers.

I think we are paying quite a bit for P4 backups and that’s just the current market. We are definitely spending money on football but I don’t see it moving the needle. It wouldn’t take much to move the needle in Basketball or baseball.

I will say that without the portal, the amount of these NIL deals would get tamped down. Because it's a stretch to pay big money to unproven freshmen, and nobody wants to wait a year for a transfer.

Immediate eligibility broke the dam. I wish they'd fix just that one thing. And then....that would push more players back to JUCO, where we actually benefit.

The biggest difference is having to do it for every player already in your program every year.

For once I agree with you.

Baseball doesn't matter, and basketball barely does. It's all about football.

You'd be better off if you wouldn't take such hardline stances and argue them to the death. When you say stupid shlt like Leach wasn't a good coach, you look like a dimwit because literally 99% of the world disagrees with you. There was a reason he was so celebrated.

Leach wasn't a bad coach, but to say he was some world beater is inane. I have repeatedly told this board why I didn't like him. His offense was like watching paint dry to me. It was like fingernails on a chalk board. It is literally the worst scheme to watch that has ever existed to me. There was little to no excitement in it unless he had receivers that could roll up YAC. He never had that here and rarely did anywhere.

Yeah. Winning with a boring offense sucks. I would really hate to have that now**

You commies watch soccer? Your boyfriends don’t make fun of you?
Actually American pro sports are very communistic. Salary caps, payroll taxes, drafts, socialist for sure. European soccer is uber capitalist. College sports are capitalist right now too.

Leach took over a worse situation? Good grief. And you wonder why nobody takes anything you say seriously. The 8 years prior to Mullen: one winning regular season and one bowl. The 8 years prior Leach: eight winning regular seasons and eight bowls. Leach took over a program that was going through one of the best stretches it has EVER had. Mullen took over a program that was in perhaps its worst stretch in the modern era. Mullen left it in good shape. Leach left a disaster. YOU argue with that.
Leach didn't leave a disaster. Arnett gutted the OC staff and the offensive players transferred out. Some defense too. We get it. You are a rundabawl fan and you hated Leach's offense. Don't rewrite history to fit your hatred of his offense.

Leach left a disaster. Leach left offensive personnel geared to run his offense. Nobody runs that anymore, not the way he did. It was always going to be a disaster when he left. That was the second major reason I was appalled when we hired him, and I said so on here the night we hired him.

Y’all can’t read evidently. I’m not a fan of one dimensional offenses of any kind. They are too easy for good defenses to stop.

Most of the people who repeated that tired diatribe have stopped doing so because it now sounds so stupid to the majority of the fan base.

Youre a 2-10 fan by every measure

Not really. Maybe here and in your circle. Leach was not as universally worshiped as you groupies think he was. The numbers don’t lie. Opinions are just that. He left a mess. People were warning we were going to take a big step back BEFORE he died. We were winning with defense and the talent was about gone.
