Good luck getting the Union to agree on one in their CBA.
Exactly, which explains how dumb they are. Because at the current rate you’re going to see those five or six small market. teams fold within the next dozen years. They should be asking for a cap and a floor so that way you have 30 competitive teams not dropping down to 24.

I'm guessing they are expecting him to pitch also? Didn't he have a serious arm injury the end of the season that ended his pitching for the rest of the year? It's their money but it seems like a ton if there are questions regarding his pitching career. Salaries in all the major sports are through the roof. Good for those who reach those lofty levels in their careers. Top end NFL quarterbacks making upwards of $2 million per start now with a hard salary cap.

As Bison said, he can’t pitch until 2025.

But that’s not going to happen, because the small market owners are doing just fine. There’s a reason that last offseason the small market owners had a chance to take a stand, but instead voted unanimously to approve a deal that will only further highlight the disparity in markets. They’re making millions, they don’t care.

Until the small market teams actually lose money, nothing will change. The last league to come around to a cap was the NHL, and it only happened once a bunch of owners started losing a ton of money.

I gave up on baseball when those owners voted that way last winter. If they don’t care, then why should I.

Agree. This is infuriating me. As a Pirates fan, they have a ridiculously small payroll and aren’t in a position to contend. However, Bob Nutting is still walking away with millions.

Maybe not. Those teams that have a low payroll and consequently put a crappy product on the field still receives around $100m annually in TV money. The less they play the players the more money the owner makes.

All MLB teams receive around $60mm in national TV money. Then the Pirates make about $50mm from local TV. So they've got $110mm before they sell a ticket, hot dog, or beer. They aren't spending that, obviously.

At the same time, let's say Nutting did decide to make $0 and just break even. I just read that Pirates total revenue for '22 was $262mm. The Dodgers was $605mm. There's just no competing with it, even if he spent everything they earn.

But their payroll is $54 million. Of course they aren’t competing. Until they keep some talent, they never will. They are a feeder system for the big market teams. It’s too bad, because Pittsburgh is a tradition rich baseball city and the fans are starving for the Pirates to have success. They will show up for a winner. Nutting doesn’t show any interest in that and has said he will not sell the team, rather pass it on to his daughter.

Oh I agree with you they should be spending more. I’m just saying that without a wholesale change in the system, even if the pirates tried to spend, the Dodgers of the world will just pay more and more to get the best players.

Basically, this is all just PR fluff. It's a 10 year/$460M deal for Ohtani. $44M of the contract is deferred for each season (with interest) and will be paid out in 2034-2043 as $68M per year.

The "$700M" and "$70M per year" are just fluff because that's after interest has accumulated on the money for 10+ years. It's no different than if he took $44M each year and put into a Treasury at the appropriate rate and withdrew it a decade later.

$46M a year is obviously a new benchmark for MLB and extremely high, but not really crazy for a player who is a great hitter and pitcher (once he heals and can pitch again). It's definitely not as obscenely out of whack number that was first reported.
