Ok, now that the dust from yesterday has settled, what have we lost?

Uva says to expect 15 players to hit the portal, the majority of which are not starters. Sounds like Beamer's trying to reset the roster. I think he knows he's got to act now in order to get this thing turned around. Things are getting any easier with TX/OU coming.

Hopefully that's true. If so, that's not too bad. Yeah, losing Antwane stings, but he was never a part of the equation for next year until he wouldn't play this year. So nothing really has changed for 2024 with him quitting. It was going to be a bonus to have him next year.

I hesitate to say that nothing has changed. He was expected to be our #1 wide receiver. There were a lot of expectations that now need to be shifted down the line to the next guy.

Uva also said some of these players might have been "encouraged" to leave. We need upgrades with players and coaches.

Well, I'm saying nothing has changed with regard to 2024 in comparison to where we thought we'd be with Antwane before this season started. We fully expected him to play this year and go pro.

Unless there any other surprises, it seems the worst of it is over. We hope.

If so, outside of Antwane, what have we lost? And, really, Antwane isn't a loss. He was not a contributor this season and we were never expecting him to be here next season prior to the injury anyway.

I guess the only contributor we haven't seen a deal for yet would be Nick E. And I don't think he's leaving, but I do think he is pushing for every dollar he can. And I don't blame him for that. And still waiting for Mario's decision. But if those two come back, then all we have lose in terms of 2024 production are guys that probably shouldn't have been takes in Beamer's first 2 classes. I agree with your assessment of Juice. Most thought he wouldn't be here next year anyway.

As, over the decades, my fervid attachment to Carolina basketball dwindled to a non-existent state, the same is happening to my once unquenchable love for Carolina football. With basketball it wasn't because of the continual losing but the anonymity of the players caused by the "one-and-done" model. The heated, despised rivalries melted away. Of course, our exit from the ACC exacerbated the problem.

With the advent of the NIL era the Gamecocks' football chances of advancing to the upper tier of SEC royalty is just as unlikely as me assuming Commissioner Sankey's duties. I hardly knew who Antwane Wells was. I just, in the last couple of months, got to know who Xavier Legette is. Who the hell is Mario Anderson (a fine RB, by the way)?

In contrast, Spencer Rattler seems like my roommate -- because he's been here TWO YEARS!! I am deeply grateful for everything he provided USC in those two years. He really is a true Gamecock.

This harangue is simply an avenue for me to offload my frustration with college basketball and football. I fear excellency in both are unattainable for Gamecock fans. Frank McGuire and Steve Spurrier were the best we ever had and the best we are ever likely to have.
Xavier Legette has been a Gamecock for 5 years. He was part of the class of 2019. Muschamp went on and on about how good he would be. If you didn't know who Legette was prior to this year you just weren't paying attention!

I do understand your frustration though with the transfers and roster overhaul.

It seemed pretty bad there last week when there was an apparent mass exodus and speculation on who might be next. So far, we have not lost anyone who was a serious contributor last season, that I can recall. Outside of Antwane and Jeter, nobody we lost was a contributor.

Well, to be fair, coming into this season, over 4 years, with 3 full seasons of play, he had 42 receptions total for 423 total yards.

Nobody "knew" who Legette was in the sense that he was an afterthought on this team for the most part until this year. He had 167 total receiving yard last season. He topped that number in 3 separate games this year.

There's not a single fan out there who expected anything close to what Legette did this year. If he had produced half as many receiving yards as he did, we would have been pleasantly surprised.

I think a lot of people, including me, wrote him off after I watched two passes bounce off his hands right into a defenders hands in that game against SCST. What a testament to working hard to get to the top after facing adversity.

Yeah, ain't nobody gonna come around here and say they saw X doing what he did this year.

That cheapens his accomplishment, in my opinion.

I vaguely remember Legette from last year (I think) as having questionable hands causing numerous "drops." He was a different guy this year.
