3. Bat Testing (On-Site). As part of the NCAA Bat Certification Program, all bats will be tested (ring test
and wall thickness test) before competition in Omaha. All teams must submit any bat that will be used
during competition on Friday, June 17 after team practices. NCAA staff will communicate further details
on-site and coordinate retrieval of bats after testing is completed. Bat testing on Friday, June 17 will
occur in the Auxiliary Room (SL-112).
The NCAA will affix a sticker to bats that are approved as of testing time and may be used for
competition. Umpires will be instructed to remove any bat that does not display a certification sticker. If
a bat approved as of testing time is used during the CWS and later becomes dented/flat/cracked during the
series, such a bat could still become impermissible in this situation even if the certification sticker is still
affixed. The umpires would remove such as an impermissible bat and penalize according to the NCAA
Baseball Rules. Any new bats a team wants to introduce into competition later in the series after initial
testing must be presented to NCAA umpire improvement staff for on-site testing in the umpire offices
before it can be used.

I've been thinking that the way to "cheat this system" was in modifying the bats...with a little lathe work, I'm sure they could be taken right back to gopher ball levels, with the most difficult part being keeping the "thud" sound instead of a ping.

Glad to see the NCAA actually addressing this possible issue...

from what I have heard. I'm not into the slow pitch stuff, but I've heard all kinds of crazy stories.

I did play co-ed softball once upon a time. One time I stepped into the batter's box and just as soon as I stepped in, I see the ball hit the catcher's mitt and the umpire called a strike. Naturally, I was pissed because there was no way that the pitcher didn't throw the ball before I got in the box. So, I complained to the umpire to no avail. So, I stood out of the box for about one minute until the made me get back in. I thought it was pretty bush league on both the pitcher and the umpire, and granted, my behavior was bush league as well. But, I couldn't believe the pither did that and got away with it and that the umpire allowed it.

And then one day I was watching smoe national slow pitch sotball tournament on TV. And sure enough, a pitcher on TV did the same thing to some other batter and they let him get away with it.

Just a totally different world.

But there was one fresh bat-related story to
come out of Friday's press conferences. Dr. Lloyd Smith, who runs one of
the NCAA's bat-testing laboratories at Washington State, acknowledged
that "altering of equipment is always a concern, and that's always a
possibility."</p>

After the press conference was over, Smith weighed in on the latest
bat-tampering method that coaches are starting to whisper about. It is
possible to remove the end cap, then remove a metal ring from inside the
barrel, then reattach the end cap.<span id="more-4811"></span></p>

"With these new BBCOR bats, to lower the performance you have to
thicken the wall of the bat," Smith told BA. "When you do that, it makes
the bat heavier, and batters don't like that. One of the ways they've
been able to lower the performance but not increase the weight is to put
these metal rings inside the barrel of the bat. So if you go in there
and take that ring out, that's going to be a problem for the game. For
this tournament here, we've tested all the bats, and we're going to
continue to do that. We're also working with manufacturers to come up
with ways in the design of the bat so that it's either more difficult to
remove the end cap or make it apparent when the end cap is removed."</p></span>
