I can't help but think of the semi-irony of Marshall losing their entire team (almost) again..... very sad indeed.
Not the same. Marshall screwed their former coach by not extending him after a Conference Championship. Coach got another job at Southern Miss and most likely many of his players will be leaving with him. Marshall only has themselves to blame for this one.

I just meant sort of from a fans of Marshall type thing.

There's a difference between quitting/opting out and declining an invitation from the get-go.

Can't blame the coach on this one, as far as I can tell. This situation, however, points out the need to deal with some systemic shortcomings regarding bowls if they want to keep the plethora of bowls out there. Frankly, paring half of them wouldn't perturb me whatsoever.

He hasn't been what you would call wildly successful there. He is 32-16 over the last four seasons. Marshall must have had a reason to not give him an extension at the pay he wanted. I'm guessing his agent already had the So. Miss job lined up.

The phrase "opting out" should be eliminated from our vernacular. It needs to be called what it is......quitting.

It's absurd on the face of it, but the vernacular was absorbed into the college football lexicon without a second thought by anyone.

Uh, yeah, in this era when any coach who remotely gives off the faint aroma of being successful is instantly gifted extensions and raises beyond anyone's wildest dreams, the fact that Marshall was willing to let him walk speaks volumes.

Also indicting is the fact that he landed at the worst team in the conference.

I've been down that stretch - all the way to south of Dallas. As far as I know, I'll never go down that stretch again.
Being from Texas myself, we used to call the the land behind the Pine Curtain. For all the reasons you can think

Is I-20 through Mississippi still terrible?
Roads are better now than a few years ago. I used to stop for the night in Meridian or Pearl but the past few years I've gotten used to driving straight through. I still get pulled over a lot in Louisiana. Shreveport was torn up last time out in October.
