I’ll probably see “The Brutalist” open captioned at the AFI Silver Theater this weekend. Close to four hours with an intermission, better be worth it.

4 hours? Can I just watch the 10 minute trailer then. 🤣and figure it out.

I don't know about half of the movies and have no recollection of hearing about them. As a result, I am unfamiliar with many of the actors. I'm certain that the primary reason for my ignorance is my rapidly advancing age but another factor is what seems to be the breadth of content afforded by streaming options. Many people make a name for themselves in vehicles shown in services I don't get or I'm busy watching things elsewhere and completely miss the popular movies/actors. Yeah, I know ...

Embarrassed to say I’ve seen zero of these. Interested in Anora and The Brutalist, maybe The Substance. TV is too interesting right now…

Rooting for Demi and Ed Norton.

Haven't seen this but I generally like Chalamet - he's sort of the only male (along with maybe Tom Holland) at that age doing really interesting work. Wouldn't mind him winning especially since it looks like they used AI to help Adrien Brody with his Hungarian accent...

Oh, this year is going to be fun withe the virtue signaling academy wetting themselves voting for all things Conclave. How can they resist voting for a movie with a hermaphrodite elected as Pope!

It's pretty well done. I'm a big Dylan fan, so was a bit skeptical. Chalamet sold me.

The last movie worth seeing was Animal House. Everything produced by Hollywood since then is crap.

I liked him a lot primarily because he was subtle, calm, Dylanesque. The movie was good, not great imho. A ‘collage of anecdotes’ is how one critic described it and after viewing I agree.

Spoiler alert… but yeah, my eyes nearly rolled into the back of my head at that “twist” at the end that was forced and meaningless to the story. Otherwise enjoyed it.

My money is on the trans woman winning best actress. You also can’t discount a Holocaust survivor movie winning Best Picture. It should be quite an Oscars race this year. Lots of sacred cows in the running.

And that is Hollywood for you!!
Not as bad as the crying game though. What a waste of a great guitar riff.
I mean what a great guitar riff.

This is just a bizarre list and questioning the “Oscar worthiness” of some. I have seen four of the nominated films. Entertaining, yes, worthy of best picture, meh. Totally shocked The Substance is on the list. It is gruesome body horror. I will want to catch The Brutalist but will wait for home viewing as bathroom breaks are a necessary part of life at my age.

I saw three of the nominees for Best Picture. Some quick thoughts on the ones I saw.
  • A Complete Unknown - I am not a Bob Dylan fan, but I loved every minute of this.
  • Conclave - The first hour was really slow and boring. My wife feel asleep on it. I thought the second hour was great and made the movie worth watching.
  • Dune Part Two - I just can't get into the Dune movies. Instantly forgettable.

The Brutalist run time is 1:45 then a 15 minute intermission (time’s almost up!) then 1:35. It’s working for me. Mrs LJ likes the music.

My review of The Brutalist: It really imploded the last half-hour. Great acting all around but, no, it doesn’t work. Good try and the minutes flew by.

Hm. Only cost $10mm to make though.

Missing for me are films by directors I really enjoy - no Fincher, PT Anderson, Scorsese, Tarantino, Chazelle, Spielberg, Coen Bros., Nolan, etc. James Mangold is easily my favorite of those nominated. I get a new generation is making their mark, but none of these films seem worth going to the theater for (except maybe the Dylan film and Dune). And honestly how in the f*** did Villaneuve not get a directing nod for Dune 2? Unreal. Star power will be severely lacking on the red carpet I’m afraid.

I will take all the movies I have never seen for $500 Alex... Haven't watched that show in many years since it became political and I was told how to think and what a horrible person I am by hollywood ...
