I’m not in the habit of telling stories that aren’t mine to share so I’m going to be as circumspect as I can be, and won’t answer any questions.

We have friends, a young couple, not long married. The wife is afflicted with a genetic disease that is 100% fatal, incurable. (Please don’t ask.) She has twenty good years left, thirty, tops. Since it’s genetic, they don’t dare have kids of their own. They are currently in the process of adopting three brothers from a group home, oldest is 10, youngest is five. I’m told that they’ll be together come September.

They met the boys this recent weekend. They rented an AirBnb and stayed together the whole time. The first evening they put the boys to bed in their own beds and in the morning found them in a single bed holding each other. They of course shared pictures of their beautiful house out in the country, and of their two dogs, great dogs. They had the greatest time together. At the end, the kids begged them to immediately take them home with them.

I am overwhelmed when I think of the happiness they will find as a family together, after a period of such disappointment and darkness. The courage and toughness it took for them to get to where they are now, wow, no words can express.

Thanks for indulging me.

The boys will arrive in two weeks. The mother and my wife are texting friends and I had the honor of seeing some photographs she made of their preparations. Three new desks. Hangings on the wall, “Be Strong.” “Have Courage.” “The Smith Family, A Perfect Blend.” They are into dirt bikes and Mom handmade a hanging of the five of them on their bikes, from the rear, in helmets and bike jackets, with Dad holding the youngest boy’s hand.

It’s going to be very hard, but, boy, are they putting their hearts into it. All respect.

I just want to put this out here, just because it’s important to me that y’all know just how much I love and respect this woman.

Her sibling is similarly afflicted with the genetic disease and it is full blown in this case. Her sibling is dying in front of her eyes, declining every day. To deal with this loss of a sibling (dementia is a symptom, so there’s that) is hard enough but to get such a vivid image of what her own death will be like, her strength and bravery are so inspiring. Love and respect.

"Every sunrise and every sunset is a blessing"

"Life is short. Break the rules. Forgive quickly.
Kiss slowly. Love truly. Laugh uncontrollably,
And never regret anything that made you smile."

"A family tragedy will be remembered forever….time will not heal the heartbreak, fond memories of happy times will last forever."

c/o my book as all of us can appreciate a life well lived............

The boys arrived last week and Mom shared a photo of them ready for the first day of school, yesterday. The dogs were in the picture too, and it’s clear that the dogs and the boys have bonded, as dogs and boys do. The boys looked so happy, so hopeful, just so thrilled that they have such loving parents in such a wonderful, beautiful home. They will thrive. They know they are loved and treasured. Seeing this picture, and knowing that my wife and I will watch them grow up, is a reminder that beauty in this world is attainable, sometimes hard won, but always precious.

The boys were legally adopted today. This little Facebook post from Mom is the real reason I’m updating: “Our lives are now a constant state of joyful chaos as I soak in as many mama days as I can.” (The boys are aware of her diagnosis.) Damn.

My wife and I met the boys today. It was such a privilege. They are all so happy together. You can easily imagine the challenges they face, but there is zero fear to be seen.

I’ve mentioned that the family is into dirt bikes, well the boys can each do wheelies!

My aunt, a CSC nun, has a saying, “This is a holy moment.” Meeting the boys, and seeing our young friends as parents, seeing this family’s pride and joy and love, it was indeed a holy moment. Again: a privilege.
