Sorry, no more Jackson is the new Sodom or Gomorrah of the 21st century. Let horse rest in peace please.

Anyway. We have some real Yellowstone season 1 or 2 shìt going on less the murders out here and I was curious for any of you scattered around small towns, what is the local drama? Any police chiefs in the take or a school board members trying to shut down a popular program or sport?

I have recently become fascinated by the ridiculous things that go down in small towns. I'll chime in later on the big drama, but a recent stupidity here highlighted in our local paper was the insight that our mayor was bragging about spending $66k on a study by a big firm out of Denver to see if the new $1800 "growth" fee added to new construction permits has added to the cost of new construction... Going out in a limb to say yes, about $1800 a pop.

Every time I think about how ridiculous most members of Congress are... I have to remember these are the best and brightest. State legislatures and city/county boards are where the really ridiculous folks get stuck.

Not really any drama, but Williamson Co (TN) added a growth fee to new construction homes meant for builders/developers. Everyone was excited about it because the county needed funding from all the transplants overtaking the infrastructure and schools. Well, I’m no Einstein but even I knew the price would be passed onto the buyers which is fine but don’t say the developers are paying the fees when it’s only passed along like all the taxes and fees the government passes along to corporations. It’s like thinking that increasing the minimum wage won’t increase prices for goods and services. 🙄

There was a satellite that fell from the sky over Brandon. My daughter caught it on film, and it was confirming a satellite did fall.

Rankin County is Ground Freaking Zero. Goon squad, state trooper affairs, Pinelake, etc. Most times the people are so stuck in their bubble they don't realize how utterly ridiculous their actions really are.

I was talking about that over Christmas over a family member who lives in the Jackson Metro. For all the well deserved bad publicity the City of Jackson gets, Rankin County is not far behind. The news stories are almost tit for tat with crime and stupid **** going on in both.

Hernando is about to hit another growth spurt without really expanding or improving roads and infrastructure. Going to be a real **** show in about 3 or 4 years.

Had some drama in the last few alderman meetings with approving some new buildings that drew the ire of residents. Some warranted and some unwarranted.

Increasing minimum wage absolutely increases the cost of services but if the minimum wage does not pay their rent then we do through subsidized housing, food stamps etc… why should I have to pay for your cheese burger?

You pay the poorest well, then we all do better not worse. The poor spend every dime they get which increases the economy way faster than putting it in A rich man’s wallet to sit on.
Inflation? Yes, it happens but as

We live west of Hernando. Been utility work going for months with a big power substation being installed. Can only assume lots of NC housing headed that way

I saw something on a different, but similar note yesterday.
On Yahoo Finance, there was a headline that said something like "Consumers spend more this holiday season, despite prices being up 3.9%"
Right - I wonder if consumers spent 3.9% more?

Yea but the expansion is all north. The 17 up that is the main drag can never be fixed. It’s worse traffic than NYC.

Yeah that’s been quite the undertaking and also the power lines that they built to run to it. The company that built the high line had all the parts for the poles on a lot down by our shop. The rings they put in the ground that the poles attach to are massive.

They also picked the absolute worst place to put a substation.

No real government corruption drama yet here. Ours is all first world drama on Nextdoor which has convinced me there will never be a utopian society. There could be no unemployment no crime great healthcare etc and people would complain about the color of the sidewalk concrete.

Some of my favorites:

A Mexican restaurant painted a mural on the side of their building that featured calaveras art. People complained that it looked Satanic and they were told there is some random ordinance that does not allow them to paint the exterior. They had to paint over it. FFWD to a couple of weeks ago and now they have a Blue Angels mural. Apparently the ordinance doesn’t apply to Naval Airplanes.

We have a lot of bears. Every week a post about them getting into trash or on a ring camera sparks the they need to be hunted/relocated vs the we need to stop destroying their habitat crowd. The hunted crowd feel they are a danger despite no attacks ever recorded here. The relocation crowd will not give there property back to provide more habitat.

The biggest is the fight between the north part of the county and the south. The north part is the seat of government and has the biggest population, but the south produces most of the tax revenue because of home values and bed taxes on the coast. The S part of the county feels like it gets the shaft for development and infrastructure. The biggest crime against humanity is when the south gets car washes, Dollar Generals, and Storage units and the north gets 5 guys despite both having equal zoning ordinances. Inevitably a thread pops up complaining about the businesses with no understanding that clearly those businesses are making money. Then the inevitable Why can’t we get a Trader Joe’s, Cheesecake Factory, Target etc posts starts. No concept of demographic specs for these franchises are considered. So when others explain that we don’t have the population to support them they disappear but reappear in threads complaining about multi family residential construction. So they want the businesses that need population but don’t want the population. Then they’ll move to the thread proposing incorporation for Navarre and blast that idea of not needing more government. Mother 17er you were just complaining about how government wasn’t stopping businesses you don’t want from legally setting up shop on commercial real estate. Rant over….

But even the expansion north there’s not adequate roads. And yes Commerce Street is an absolute nightmare during the day. It wouldn’t be so bad if the red lights around the interstate ramps weren’t a cluster17. The McCracken Rd redlight screws up the flow.

Madison/Gluckstadt:

Man arrested for shooting deer near PD
A Gluckstadt man was arrested after shooting a deer in front of the new police station.
“Mr. Sanders did share with us that if he would have known the police department was open he wouldn’t have shot the deer,” Hale said.

MDWFP also confiscated the carcass of the deer Sanders shot.

Hale said the discharging of the firearm in the city would not have been illegal just a few months ago after the city board passed a firearms ordinance at the Oct. 8 regularly scheduled meeting.

Two horses were shot at the Reunion Horse Stables around Christmas Day.

Madison Police responded to The Reunion Horse Stables, 515 Gluckstadt Road, to a report of two horses being shot.

One of the horses succumbed to its injuries on scene, and one was taken to a local veterinary clinic and is expected to make a recovery, MPD said in a Facebook post.

It's beyond anything you can imagine. It's truly "taken the place of the BMW, as the status symbol of choice", if you know you know. But they also keep the BMW.

What kills me is the one-upping and strategizing going on at the Mexican restaurant or BWW every weekend night. You'll have a table with 36 people. All the men sitting around on one end acting like some free masons, the women fake-friending each other, and the kids all buried in cheese dip and their Iphone 16s on the other end. No telling how much wasted food piles up from these people.

I'm certainly not going to defend the wild stuff that goes on in Rankin County, especially the Sheriff who should have been out of a job a long time ago, and the recent issues with he Pearl PD. But Rankin County is still one of the safest counties statistically, and not just in Mississippi. There is less crime statistically in Rankin County than in Madison County.

There are 160k people in Rankin County now, and when you hear of a murder it's still big news.

I believe the only people out there who talk up crime as a significant issue in Rankin County are Jackson Jambalaya commenters and Madison folks who want to justify paying $280/ft to live on an 1/8 acre lot where their house scrapes their neighbor's when the wind blows.

Nearby town on its deathbed is getting some kind of government funded solar farm. When I say deathbed I mean Walmart and KFC said 17 it and left! A local business man brought in some solar company and an alderman was backing another solar company bidding on the project. Come to find out the alderman is employed by the solar company as an advisor. Business man’s company won the vote by the city alderman with the mayor breaking a tie vote. Alderman on the take has taken his displeasure to Facebook and made it personal. Business man and mayor have sued the alderman for slander or something. It kinda makes me want to attend the next board meeting even though I don’t live in the town

We have one now where a lady is complaining about the YMCA using facial recognition for entry into their new 24/7 gym. She says she feels like it is using sensitive data. She posted this on a public website where her profile is a close up picture of her face with her real name.

Holy conflict of interest, Batman!

There’s about to be a lot of solar farms in Desoto County and the board of supervisors is all about it. All they see is the dollar signs on the taxes from it.

You think prohibiting low productivity workers from legally working is going to decrease the subsidies we give them?

You pay the poorest well, then we all do better not worse.
A minimum wage doesn't pay the poorest well. Technically it doesn't have anything to do with the poorest, but to the extent it does, it reduces the likelihood that they can find a job at all b/c they have a higher hurdle to meet to be economic for an employer.

The poor spend every dime they get which increases the economy way faster than putting it in A rich man’s wallet to sit on.
Inflation? Yes, it happens but as
Consumption doesn't increase our quality of life, investment does. That's really irrelevant to the question of whether we should prohibit low skilled/productivity workers from legally working, but if we wanted to take it into account anyway, investment in technology and physical capital is going to make us richer as a society than some lower skilled workers having a few more dollars to spend (even ignoring that that the ones that lose their jobs will have less to spend).

The reason there is no real clamor from Rankin County citizens for the Sheriff to resign/be removed over the Goon Squad, to quote Col Nathan Jessup, is that in places deep down inside that we don't talk about at parties we want them on the wall. They weren't targeting law abiding citizens, they were targeting known thugs, sending messages to those thugs and others that they aren't welcome in Rankin.

Correct, but like anything, they go too far. All that torture and shlt was just so unnecessary.

And remember them bringing in damn military armor and blowing that house up when that kid had barricaded himself into that house in Crossgates?

As somebody mentioned, Rankin with the goon squad seems to be in the news a lot for a small town.

There was a doctor in greenwood that tried to hire a hitman to take out a local lawyer because he thought he was part of the illuminati or something, and also muslim? That I think was within the past 5 years or so. Same person that told me that story told me about another Greenwood lawyer getting shot by a farmer because they were both having extramarital affairs with the same woman and the farmer was jealous and then the farmer committing suicide but the sheriff ruling it an accident because he was presumably worried about the family getting the life insurance. Not sure how long ago that one was. There was also a story about a lawyer getting kidnapped and robbed while getting gas after seeing his mistress, so he had to make up this big story about how everything went down because apparently he thought if his wife knew where he got kidnapped (which was nowhere near where he was supposed to be), she would know he was 17ing around and who with. That one sounded like it happened decades ago though.

There was relatively recently a story in Hattiesburg that was too convoluted for me to follow, but it involved two families that maybe both manufactured or sold trailer homes and there was intermarriage and extramarital inter17ing between the families and somebody ended up getting shot and another family member being alleged to have hired the shooter? I'm pretty fuzzy on that one. I couldn't make myself care enough to pay attention but the other people listening to the story seemed to be entertained. There is also apparently somebody that makes instagram or tiktok posts on it.
