Beautiful scenery. Thru Colorado, Utah, Montana, the Rockies. Looks like a fun trip and also do some sightseeing in SF, Lake Tahoe, etc.
OT: Anyone taken the California Zephyr from Chicago to Napa/S.F. area?

I'd pick it up in Denver. IMO, anything E of Denver is not "scenic".
I'd also shoot for spring v. summer/fall due to typical seasonal smoke from western fires. Tahoe included. Smoke is still going late Sept.
You can sightsee a lot of SF/Bay using BART. You could fly/shuttle to LA metro and catch another train back E. Depart home from Albuquerque.

I'm sure it's a beautiful route (any time you can go), but the Zephyr doesn't go through Montana
