In today's sports environment of "me, me, me" this is breath of fresh air.

In high school, we would sometimes enter our second 4x100 relay team as all throwers when the other school would agree to do the same. Senior year against Southern, both first team relays DQed and me and my fellow throwers won. Sadly, no team points were awarded as we were not the designated scoring group

My daughter ran in two relays this month in a big time event. One of the girls also qualified for another relay (4x800) and individually for the mile. She lined up to start the distance medley to run the 1200m leg and had a big sleeve on her leg and a horrible limp. She started running, hobbled, and I whispered to my wife, “No way she finishes. We’ve spent all this money and our daughter isn’t even going to run.” But after half a lap or so she lost the limp and pushed through. Team finished in third place. Pretty phenomenal. She did some treatment and ran the other relay the next day. Team finished 7th. Two days later was the 1600 that she qualified for individually and she was on crutches and couldn’t compete. I was thoroughly impressed by her putting the team above her own glory. It was pretty inspiring.

We did the same thing in high school except they made us run the 4x400. Called it the Jelly Belly Relay.
