I was wondering how many have been to Broadway (or even the local high school) and seen a musical... My first I saw on Broadway was Miss Saigon. I liked it so much that I went back to see it three times! My favorite part is when the helicopter flies onto stage. It is AWESOME! Does anyone else have a musical they enjoyed to share?

Phantom of the Opera. Saw it twice, at the Walnut Street Theater.

edit - I also saw The Who's Tommy in Philly sometime in the early 1990s. Great stuff.

- Not your question, but-
Only show I have seen on Broadway is To Kill a Mockinbird - also twice. Jeff Daniels' performance is amazing.

One of our favorite things to do! I've seen....

- Chicago (London)
- Book of Mormon x 2 (London, New York)
- Phantom of the Opera (DC)
- Mean Girls (previews, DC)
- Les Miserables (DC)
- An American in Paris (New York)
- Hamilton (DC)
- Cabaret (New York)
- Hedwig and the Angry Inch (New York)
- Something Rotten (New York)
- Wicked (New York)
- Miss Saigon (DC)
- Best Little Whorehouse Goes Public (New York)
- Guys and Dolls (New York)

Going to see 'Come From Away' in DC this summer; can't wait! I will say Miss Saigon is probably my least favorite of the big time musicals I've seen. It's depressing, and very, very long. There are maybe two songs that I really, really like too. But, it's a classic and worth seeing once. Additionally, I love small theater too - saw a Steve Martin penned play 'Picasso at the Lapin Agile' in a small DC theater that was really, really good.

I've seen many in the Pittsburgh Cultural District and college & high school productions, but none on Broadway. My favorite is 1776.

Have seen many shows over the years. On Broadway when I lived back East and here in the Twin Cities.

While not on Broadway, I think Spielberg did an amazing job with West Side Story. I was blown away. Wish I would have seen it in the theater.

Way back when I saw Monty Python live on Broadway. While not a true musical, they did sing about Spam and other things.

I’ve seen about 20 shows on Broadway, plus a season ticket holder of the Pittsburgh Broadway Series for 18 years. My favorites:

Les Miserables (saw it at least a dozen times)
Wicked
Beautiful
Jersey Boys
Avenue Q
1776
Hamilton
Camelot
Phantom of the Opera

Only Broadway show I've ever seen was Moving Out. Loved it. Saw Jersey Boys twice, Phantom, Lion King and Million Dollar Quartet in Vegas. Best show I've seen in Vegas may have been Lord of the Dance.

I watched WSS this weekend and really found it to be incredibly slow. I never saw the original film or any stage productions, so I wasn’t all that familiar with the material. It’s extremely long and while I think it was well made/acted, I couldn’t wait for it to end. I also wasn’t expecting to to be nearly identical to Romeo and Juliet.

Amelie seemed like a slam dunk but just didn’t connect for whatever reason. I would have loved to see it with Phillipa Soo….

My 8th grade music teacher taught the show to us and for a while after that could not stand it. I have softened considerably since then and have seen the original movie as well as stage productions. That said, it made me realIy appreciate the tweaks done by Spielberg. Also, think the Bernstein/Sondheim combo is remarkable and the music is timeless. The story still holds up and yes, it’s definitely a contemporary R&J.

It was very well done and inventive but didn’t draw an audience. It closed a few weeks after we saw it.

The guy who sang and played the Billy Joel stuff, Wade Preston, hangs around NEPA and has played at a local tavern near us quite often. He has also toured with Kasim Sulton doing old Utopia songs

I’ve seen about 20 over my lifetime on Broadway and many in Philadelphia but my all time favorite was Spamalot when I saw it in London. The audience knew the whole play by heart, and the theater in the West End looked like a castle. “I will fart in your general direction.” The best I saw on Broadway was probably Chorus Line.

When we saw Spamalot on Broadway it starred Tim Curry, Hank Azaria, David Hyde Pierce , and Alan Tudyk. The best we saw was The Producers with Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick.

Saw Nathan Lane on Broadway in 'Laughter on the 23rd Floor' back in the 90's. Really, really good.

Saw Les Mis and others on Broadway
Tommy when it came to Penn State
Jesus Christ Superstar with Ted Neely at least three times.
When Ted Neely performed at Penn State back in the 1990's, the final scene where Jesus goes up to heaven, the music ends and the cast comes out for the curtain call. Ted Neely comes out at the end for his curtain call. He pulls back his robe and shows off a PSU t-shirt he was wearing. Biggest cheer ever heard in Eisenhower Auditorium.

I always busted my group of West Side PSU friend's nuts by saying the West Side Story was 10 guys beating up one guy on Main Ave. 🤣 (I also have family ties to WS)

Not a musical, but I was in the front row for "God of Carnage" with Jeff Daniels, James Gandolfini, Hope Davis and Marcia Gay Harden. It was really intimidating having "Tony Soprano" stand right in front of me.

Saw Hedwig with John Cameron Mitchell in a near full leg cast. Awesome show. Cabaret was noteworthy too since Sienna Miller and Alan Cumming were in it (plus, the theatre was at the old Studio 54 and set up like a Weimar era Berlin burlesque nightclub).

Musicals are awful. Plays are awful, in fact. Plays are just people shouting words overdramatically. It's jarring, not fun or appealing at all. Musicals are plays, but with random breaks into mostly awful song. I've seen a few in my lifetime, and tried over and over again to give them a chance, thinking I was just some Neanderthal unable to appreciate the nuances of "true art," but ... no ... they're just terrible. The wife likes them (of course), but luckily she has plenty of friends and family to accompany her when she wants to go. One kid participated in the middle school musical and has now sworn off all musicals, and the younger one is more open to them and has even shown interest in joining Drama Club, but hopefully once the testosterone kicks in, that'll change.

Okey dokey. Posting about which musicals you love ... not mindblowingly self-indulgent. Posting that you hate musicals ... mindblowingly self-indulgent. Got it.

I will agree that many, if not most musicals aren't very good. However, when a musical comes together it can be spectacular. Comparing a kid in a middle school musical to Lin Manuel Miranda in Hamilton is like comparing your 12 year old nephew who plays QB for his middle school to Tom Brady. Not remotely the same.

I didn’t compare a middle school musical to Hamilton.
