When I was a kid, my parents took me to "Sinjin" Terrell's Lambertville Music Circus to see The Music Man. It's been my favorite musical ever since.

Neshaminy High School put on Oliver when I was student. One of my friends played the Artful Dodger so I went to see it. I also saw Brigadoon at NHS.

My wife and I had season tickets to the West Virginia Publis Theater at WVU Summer musical program for a couple of years. The only musicals I remember were:
South Pacific
Fiddller on the Roof
The Music Man
Camelot
The Sound of Music
Man of La Mancha
Oklahoma
West Side Story

I graduated Neshaminy in 1974. You? The actor who played the Artful Dodger, were his initials KT?

Just 1- Phantom of the Opera. Figured when we were in Vienna we should at least see the Opera House.

'68. I'm an old phart. Just so you know, I was "We Are. . ." on the old board. The Dodger wasn't KT. I can't remember his last name. I'll probably think of it later today.

Edit: Two cups of coffee and a shower woke up the hibernating brain cells. The Dodger's initials were ET.

Ah. No worries. My sisters were involved big time in the Concert Choir (not me, hah!) and musical theater. (Oldest sister played Dolly.)

BTW, my oldest is a professional musician and sometimes pulls gigs in the pit for traveling shows in Portland. He recently played a week of Mean Girls in Portland and loved it. He said it’s pretty intense being locked in all evening for a show. Just like the actors, everyone in the pit orchestra has to hit every note.

They wake up in the morning saying, “I’m going to be playing in the pit tonight!” They’ve trained their entire lives for this and then go out and play. Awesome.

Some nice visuals in Mean Girls… . I saw with the original cast and Taylor Louderman - Regina - is a stunner…(also, all three ‘Mean Girls’ were Michigan grads…).

Musicals are awful. Plays are awful, in fact. Plays are just people shouting words overdramatically. It's jarring, not fun or appealing at all. Musicals are plays, but with random breaks into mostly awful song. I've seen a few in my lifetime, and tried over and over again to give them a chance, thinking I was just some Neanderthal unable to appreciate the nuances of "true art," but ... no ... they're just terrible. The wife likes them (of course), but luckily she has plenty of friends and family to accompany her when she wants to go. One kid participated in the middle school musical and has now sworn off all musicals, and the younger one is more open to them and has even shown interest in joining Drama Club, but hopefully once the testosterone kicks in, that'll change.

I have seen a few but hands down the Lion King was the best. With that said, I am taking the family to see Hamilton in May; hopefully, that is as good as everyone says that it is.

Thanks, Yeah, the rest of the time he is gigging with the best of the best. Tonight at the 1905 in Portland he is sharing the stage with Charlie Porter, a Juilliard trained Grammy winning trumpet player and this past weekend he was backing up Vanessa Rubin, a famous Jazz vocalist. The kid leads an interesting life. He is an Upright and electric bassist primarily And has more work than he can manage. He does enjoy the workmanlike “ I have been trained for this” aspect of his career.

So great to see.

I have seen many a play/musical on and off Broadway. My theatre going goes back when the show was taken on the road on its way to Broadway. One of the last stops on the road was Philadelphia. Some of the plays /musicals were good and some stunk-up the place. Several years my wife and I would see most of the plays nominated for an Antoinette Perry Award for Excellence in Broadway Theatre, more commonly known as the Tony

BTW, we were discussing this topic and I was really grinding on My memory bank and realized back in the last 80s or early 90s I attended an off Broadway show called Vampire Lesbians of Sodom. This was a wild night and probably included drugs, alcohol, dinner somewhere excellent and laughs. At one point many years ago my brother lived on West 80th and I routinely visited NYC to go to shows, concerts, the Yankees, dinner, museums, etc. etc. If you ever find yourself in a situation where you have someone close to you living in the city or Brooklyn, take advantage of it.

When my oldest was in grad school and gigging fairly often in NYC and Brooklyn, I would drive up any chance I could to enjoy an evening that could not be recreated in Reading Pennsylvania. New York is and has always been someplace special as far as I am concerned.
