Seems to be a rather odd choice, and I can think of only one reason why.

As far his resume, his team started 3-0 and finished 1-8, losing 6 in a row to finish the season. They also had one of the worst second half collapses of all-time, blowing a 29-0 halftime lead over a Stanford team that finished 3-9.

Is it kind of like Time's "person of the year?" Wherein it's not necessarily the best person (I think bin laden was named one year), but just the person that influenced the world the most that year (for better or worse).

Deion is probably influenced, or had the biggest impact, on the sports world this year for sure.

In a similar vein, though not quite as absurd, Mike Gundy was named Big 12 coach of the year, over Steve Sarkisian.

Oklahoma State was crushed by South Alabama and humiliated by UCF.

I don't buy that. For 3 weeks, it was hype city, that's true. And much of that hype was manufactured. It was crickets after that.

I can't really see any influence he had.

Probably made the decision several months back.

Well, he’s basically the face of the transfer portal and NIL. Really the first coach to say he’s going to exploit it and then did in as public a way as you can.

It’s not about his season’s results - it’s more about the shakeup of the old ways of college sports as a whole. Players now get paid, so he treats them like employees - essentially firing and hiring them.

But what he did produced disastrous results. Nobody will ever try to build a roster that way again.

You are only looking at the Colorado part of the equation. I know for some of you HBCUs don't count, but he got 4 and 5 star players with NIL deals to forego that and go to Jackson, Mississippi. He basically rebuilt that program and got a Power 5 coaching job basically on his own when he was being ignored even by his own Alma Mater. He even got Nick Saban worried about his ability to take recruits. So, its not about wins and losses. At least not yet when it comes to Colorado. It was his effect on how business is done.

I’d wait until next year to make any judgments. As it is, he turned a 1 win team into a 4 win team overnight. Lou Holtz turned a 1 win team into a 0 win team, but I think his overall tenure would be considered a success.

Once they hit up the portal this year they should be one of the more talented teams in the country. Then we’ll see who he is as a coach.

Well, for one, he didn’t coach at an HBCU this year.
