The place has become a sinkhole of depravity. Really, who watches the garbage they are advertising?
Yeah I think I know where you're coming from. Used to love Discovery channel programming but them catering to perhaps 5% (may be on the high side) of the population that wants to watch drag shows and kids receiving hormone therapy is a little too on the extreme side for me.

Like Deadliest Catch, Moonshiners, Naked and Afraid, Gold Rush and all of the Alaskan shows? The same shows that have been on for about a decade+ or is there one new show that people can avoid pretty easily but need to start a thread on? Not even sure what show you two are referencing, but I look at the programing and it appears to be the same shows in a new season.

+1. I haven't watched the Discovery Chanel in years, mostly because its all crap. I had to look at their website to see their shows...
Perhaps it was "This Came out of Me" or the "Amish Mafia" that "triggered" the OP?
Obviously it was something in this list...

Ya know, I used to watch stuff on the Discovery channel all the time. Most of the shows have run their course in my opinion. Deadliest Catch is same old same old. Gold Rush is same old same old. Naked and Afraid is just dumb. These new shows that try to manufacture drama to make it seem more exciting. I found that with Gold Rush, oh a piece of equipment broke, holy crap the sky is falling, but whiz bang its now fixed. Boring Boring Boring. Its not just the Discovery channel though, other channels do this as well to try to get people to watch. I think the world is running out of interesting stuff to make a reality show out of which is why we need more sports on TV. Bring back Aussie Rules Football and Death Diving

Mencken is proven right on a daily basis. Homestead Rescue is good for a few laughs, if you're not the one being "rescued."

Not sure if it was Discovery, but I used to like the “How It Was Made” shows.

I usually watch 2 or 3 shows at once. Can’t stand commercials which are longer than show segments.

Twenty years ago I loved A&E, History Channel, Discovery, and TLC. They all had well produced series about science, technology, history, etc. It was great stuff for a geek like me. All those topics are very deep and varied but the networks must have decided they explored them thoroughly enough. Now the programming consists of fat people, midgets, folks running around naked, and people roughing it in the wild.

They have found pandering preferable to knowledge.

or learning to evolve is harder for some? You needed to let this out somehow.....so much anger for people that aren't impacting your life.

Too many channels with programming to fill - The Kardashians started the end of decent TV - the networks figured out they could put that stupid reality crap on 24/7 for very cheap so why spend money on production values.

As much as I hate the Kartrashians I can't even blame this on them. MTV started it on May 21st 1992 with the premier of The Real World. Its been down hill like a speeding freight train ever since.

Aw! Early Real World's were pretty good! It was very much a 'reality' show in that there was zero prompting or staging by producers. The people worked jobs, went to school, had relationships, etc. I think Real World started going the other direction sometime around the London season. Seattle, New York, Boston, San Francisco were all pretty good.

You're right I liked the one in New York and then parts of the one in San Fran. I stopped after that.
When it first started, and I might be wrong here, I think it was a "reality" TV program but they changed quickly with about the 3rd or 4th iteration of that and (was it Road Rules) then we started getting all the out of work actors that signed up for these "reality" programs and well it went down hill.
I feel the same about Survivor. First year interesting the rest not so much.

Haha... agree with you about Gold Rush. I still watch the show and each week wonder how on earth this is still on TV... but for some odd reason I keep watching, half hoping there will be a week when the bush mechanic cannot fix it and then what happens?
Another odd show was the "Bush" family. A group of characters that was so weird you had to watch, if for no other reason than to feel comparatively normal after watching this group!

I hear you. I miss the days when A&E actually featured the arts, the Hi story channel featured actual history, Discovery & TLC showed things actually worthy of discovery and learning, and the Travel Channel was about travel. I found some of the reality shows to be interesting for a season like Deadliest Catch & Gold Rush because they do actually show what is involved in commercial fishing and gold mining. After that, it is more about whatever drama they can drum up. What’s really frustrating is that they can still do quality shows when they want to like the recent biographies on Franklin & Roosevelt. Shows like The Food That Built America or Modern Marvels are interesting. I’m a sucker for flea markets so shows like Flea Market Flip and American Pickers are fun in small doses. About the only reality show that I watch regularly is Top Chef, but even that I have to dvr the show so I can fast forward through the drummed up emotional crap. Call me a jaded old fart, but I don’t care if you are trying to win to honor your next door neighbor’s nephew’s hamster that died of typhus, I’m just watching for the food porn. The Smithsonian channel has some good stuff as does Tastemade (cooking) but they tend to pack the shows in big chunks of back to back to back episodes. My favorite show on Tastemade is a guy named Luke Nguyen. He travels around a country talking to various local people, cooks, farmers, fishers, etc. learns about their food and then cooks up his interpretation of the local cuisine over a portable gas burner. He’s done shows in Vietnam, France, England, etc. Good stuff.
