the next King and Queen of England, or might this be the end of the British Monarchy. Just read some fascinating articles about the state of the monarchy.

I don't know; most Brits I know love the monarchy. I don't know that it will end per se, but probably has to evolve beyond it's current form. Sticking it to Charles would be sweet - he's by all accounts a total assh*hole.

Does the queen have the authority to skip someone or are the rules carved in stone? It's weird to think the heir to the throne is 73 years old (I had to look that up). Not growing up under a monarchy, the whole concept seems odd to me. Bow/curtsy to someone just because of the family they belong to?? I don't get it.

Doesn't matter what I or anyone else think. HM cannot "pass over" Charles to make William king. Charles would either have to die or abdicate. Otherwise, it would take an act of Parliament to amend its own laws governing royal succession.

Yeah, but Crown Princess Victoria looks like this:

We're in negotiations for her to sell me the throne, though I'm having difficulty justifying increasing the price beyond my current bid of SEK 192.

I doubt if Charles gives a crap. Back in the old days he would have poisoned his mother long ago.

The whole monarchy thing is as crazy as some religions. There are special people who are god like or sent from god or whatever and they are meant to rule over you. I watched a CSpan history show about Thomas Paine and literally just bought his collected works from Amazon.

Monty Python and the Holy Grail > Quotes > Quotable Quote

King Arthur: I am your king.

Peasant Woman: Well, I didn't vote for you.

King Arthur: You don't vote for kings.

Peasant Woman: Well, how'd you become king, then?

[Angelic music plays... ]

King Arthur: The Lady of the Lake, her arm clad in the purest shimmering samite, held aloft Excalibur from the bosom of the water, signifying by divine providence that I, Arthur, was to carry Excalibur. That is why I am your king.

Dennis the Peasant: Listen. Strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government. Supreme executive power derives from a mandate from the masses, not from some farcical aquatic ceremony.

Arthur: Be quiet!

Dennis the Peasant: You can't expect to wield supreme power just 'cause some watery tart threw a sword at you!”

Totally agree. It’s such an odd thing to do. You’re literally saying they are better than you simply because of who their mommy or daddy are.

I’m not sure the Queen can choose her successor. I don’t know much about the next group after Chuckles but the stories I’ve read about him in the British press are not flattering (some are just laughable and he appears very entitled/ stupid at times). I think when he takes over the support for the monarchy in the UK takes a major hit.

No way, Nohow do I want to be one of the sad posters that craps on other people's threads, but I find the whole concept of a monarchy repugnant.

The fact that a majority of Britons still support the monarchy in the 21st century (a time of expressed social equality and distaste for perceived privilege) speaks, in my opinion, to the continuing need for humans to get affirmation through external means. Yes...I see the irony of posting the previous sentence on a college football fan message board.

The whole concept of royalty is disturbing to me. You're born into a family, and you did nothing to deserve the opulence and material wealth you now have. You're a celebrity just because of the luck of being born into a family. About as un-American as it gets....unless you're a Kardashian.

Or a Kennedy, a Bush, a Clinton, etc. It happens in America too.

I get your point. Families that acquire power through economic and/or political accomplishment pass along that power to those simply born into it. Every country (including the UK) has those families.

However, it's not quite the same with the British monarchy. Figuratively, they are superfluous third nipple with (I believe) constitutionally sanctioned authority. Elected PM's must bow to them and consult with them on matters of state. It's from a different time in history. Off with their heads! Kidding.

The majority of Britons support the Monarchy because they view it as something to rally the untrue country around in a non-political way.

Not my cup of tea (pun intended), but that is the premise. Other than this, the Monarchy no longer has any power.

I've mentioned before that i am primarily Irish (Catholic) and still have family outside Dublin. Two grandparents were born in Ireland and migrated to South Boston late 19th century before the Irish revolution. I mention this to give context to my deep held desire that nothing but pain, misery, and tragedy befall the House of Windsor.
