One can only hope that it is due to an imminent 3rd lane being added in both directions.

from I-26 to I-95 were removed?
That section is close to being next in the widening. I live 2 miles from I-95 in Hampton County. A large portion of the median and rights-of-way have been cleared of trees as the first sections of the widening of I-95 will start at the SC-Ga. state line and eventually end at I-26 for a while.

9 years ago almost to the day (02/14/2014), we had a terrible ice storm and thousands of trees broke and fell. Since then, I have noticed the cutting of these trees in the interstate medians. Blocking an interstate with huge pines does not need to happen. just my thoughts tho ...

and I'm speaking of I20

Most everywhere you look in the states I system trees in the median are being removed. Whether for aesthetics or overall safety and access I'm not sure, but it's happening all over.

We had a lot of trees removed many years ago on I-26 in the Jedburg area. Evidently, stats showed it was an area where a high number of drivers would fall asleep. I dont recall if the thinking opening it up would reduce the numbers or they just removed them making it safer to hit a divider. In any case, thousands were removed. Wouldnt surprise me if instead of falling asleep, the new problem is distracted driving. Might end up losing all the trees everywhere on the interstates... especally if the trees they have removed reduced the numbers of accidents.
