DVD Alert: Lost in Translation 12:15 am Monday, 12:15-2:15.

I know that @Midnighter shares my opinion that this is a genuinely great film. It grabs me like few others do.

Love it. Hits differently as a father some 20 years later than when I first saw it in my 20’s. Feel more like Bill Murray these days….

One might say that this is a hallmark of a great film. Anyway, I couldn’t let this news pass, you got to stand up for the board.

Some of the old films, especially the noir, really hold up. I just saw The Killers again, the first film for both Burt Lancaster and Ava Gardner, lol at how it hits every note perfectly. I expect The Asphalt Jungle to be shown, I’ll let the board know.

Showed my daughters “rocky”. So, they already have seen creed and rocky balboa and bits and pieces of others.

so we have a surprise movie every so often that I pick. So I always wait for their reaction. When rocky came across the screen they were thinking that they have seen it before and ugh a dad movie.

so afterwards I asked them about it and they said they loved ita db were surprised he didn’t win. One of my favorites all time. Of course I have like 20 favorites all time.

Yeah but what does he whisper at the end….
Whether there was a scripted line or not is in question. SC says they had the scene planned but no line specifically decided. Whether something was said or not will never be revealed. The mystery of what it was, if anything, has unexpecctedly survived much longer than if the answer was revealed, and I think they like it that way.

What Really Happened in Lost in Translation‘s Final Scene, According to Sofia Coppola
Director Sofia Coppola finally opens up about the mystery that’s been driving the film’s fanatics crazy for 15 years.
WMAGAZINE
by Steph Eckardt
08.27.18

It’s been 15 years since the release of the film Lost in Translation, which is also to say that it’s been 15 years that the film’s final scene has been a subject of debate. Sofia Coppola‘s second film, after her directorial debut, the Virgin Suicides, stars Scarlett Johansson and Bill Murray as two strangers turned unlikely companions during a stay at the Park Hyatt in Tokyo. They develop a relationship that blurs the line between friendship and romance—which is why the last scene, during which Murray’s aging actor spots Johansson’s confused newlywed in a crowd in the street, gets out of his car and puts his mouth to her ear to whisper some unknowable, profound farewell in her ear, has been such fertile territory for theories and speculation over the years. (Both Johansson, who was just 17 at the time, and Murray, have stayed mum about the mystery ever since.)

As it turns out, Coppola wasn’t trying to troll us with the scene. The director recently spoke with the magazine Little White Lies to reflect on the film’s anniversary, and clarified that even she doesn’t have a clue what’s buried deep in the audio. “People always ask me,” she said, after detailing just how essential she always considered Murray to be to the film, particularly once she became familiar with his ability to improvise. (Even though it took her a year to track him down and convince him to be in the film in the first place.)

Alas, that ability turns out to also be what’s been driving fans crazy for the past 15 years, since, as Coppola put it, to her, “that thing Bill whispers to Scarlett was never intended to be anything. I was going to figure out later what to say and add it in and then we never did.” She did, however, offer up a bit more: “It was between them. Just acknowledging that week meant something to both of them and it affects them going back to their lives,” she continued. “I always like Bill’s answer: that it’s between lovers—so I’ll leave it at that.”

’Rocky’ is a great film that sadly has been overshadowed by the franchise. Over the years I’ve made a few people watch it for the first time and they have all be surprised at how much they enjoyed it. Their perception had been skewed by the franchise.

They are doing that with star wars and marvel as well it looks like.

Is it odd that I feel this way? One of the greatest regrets of my life is that Robert Duvall was not in The Godfather 3. Oh God, so tragic, what a freaking waste. (TCM just now showed a preview for GF1.)

More: I copied Duvall doing Hagen in my own interactions with work colleagues. Very effective. I had a reputation for getting the job done competently and quickly. Thank you, Robert Duvall!

31 Days on TCM is always great! The wife and I saw a bunch of Oscar films during their lineup every year. I remember watching Some Like It Hot and Double Indemnity and marveling at old classic cinema.

Five Star Final on tomorrow morning. "A sensationalistic newspaper causes tragedy for several innocent people with ruthless reporting and distorted facts."

It's apropos to the times.

Other good ones coming up:

3/8 @ 8:00 pm - "The French Connection" followed by "Bonnie and Clyde."
3/13 @ 8:00 pm - "The Sting" preceding the "Asphalt Jungle."
3/16 @ 8:00 pm - "Spartacus: Restored Edition" followed by "Ben Hur."
I saw French connection with my dad brother and sister when I was super young. My mom the RN would work Sunday 3-11 shift, dad would get us all ready for bed, ice creamed and lined up on the couch for Sunday Night Movie nite.
He had 2 simple rules, violations resulted in immediate bedtime:
”don’t ask any questions“ and “don’t tell your mother”. When my dad passes, this will be one of my fondest memories of him.

They're ready for Flash Gordon. Or Big Trouble in Little China. Whichever.

Well, The French Connection was based on a true story.

I have to agree that it doesn’t hold up all that well, but it was made in 1971. It was considered groundbreaking for its time, I guess.

I'll probably take some heat for this but yea I kind of think its overrated as well. It has the best car chase scene outside of Bullitt and I think thats what "makes" the movie.
I liked The Conversation better. 🤷‍♂️

Yes. Read up on the director and he likes these cliff hangers that make you think they say like the exorcist, but to hear the gun shot and end it with quick titles was strange. What was the gun shot for? Shooting another cop? Shooting the wind? Funny thing is Dirty Harry came out the same year. Both cops obsessed and that was groundbreaking. I would take that movie any day but as you said the true story wins over it.

I agree. In my opinion, outside of the car chases, there's no reason to watch Bullit or The French Connection. I did enjoy reading the book that the French Connection was based on.

Love the Conversation.

Part of the problem with The French Connection is that the tension seems so contrived, especially nowadays as everyone has watched a thousand hours of police procedure movies and tv. We know the heroin is in the car and the director makes a show of tearing the car apart and finding nothing. They’re ready to give up and the mechanic says he’s checked everything except the rocker panels. Well, why did you not check the rocker panels? It’s a product of its era.

The missus is at book club and I’m watching Dog Day Afternoon on the Watch TCM app. I get this app free because TCM is already part of my package. Basically, you get a good majority of their movies for a month after they’ve been shown, without having to DVD.

AL Pacino young is so much better than Al Pacino old, the movie is from 1975. And I do greately admire John Cazale, an amazing actor.
