January 23, 1918:
Birthday of Gertrude Elion, American biochemist who received the 1987 Nobel Prize in medicine for creating a drug with the remarkable success rate of totally curing 80% of all childhood leukemia patients. In addition, she helped develop drugs to prevent kidney rejection and to treat anemia, hepatitis, gout, herpes, malaria and shingles. She also helped create the first licensed U.S. drug to combat AIDS.

Also David Hilbert, the greatest mathematician between 1890-1920. A great man as well, a great mentor.

Little known (probably?) fact. Hilbert and Einstein found themselves in a race to derive the field equations for general relativity, 1915. Einstein won but Hilbert almost trumped him. Itā€™s a good story.

Hilbert was an extremely kind man. Just saying.
