I'd let it slide, depending on the line of work. If you two work for a religious organization, I'd fire him. Otherwise, I'd have a one off like you did. Both of you were drinking, so you didn't set the best example if you were looking for no trouble. And yes, I realize most people drink on business trips. I would have less respect for him as a person, but he's paid to do a job and apparently does it well. Manage him during working hours and advise him about his personal life as needed.

Dude. If you fired everybody in a restaurant who put their dick in the wrong place, you would be running the place by yourself. Second, you would be inserting yourself into somebody else's marriage. Even if you don't tell her, firing him right after the trip, she is going to know what's up.
The dude that got busted stealing from the national, did so without his wife finding out. He got fired from there, admitted in court he took Arnold Palmers green jacket and a bunch of other stuff over his time working there. Fenced it all to around 5.8. They lived in a real nice house. The week after he admitted it, his wife filed for divorce. From him working there, to admission in court was about 3 years.

You have a guy with poor judgment doubling down on that judgment with a ridiculous lie. He seems like a big liability.

Now, we need to address DS’s picture request. Do you have any progress on that front?

Sorry you have to deal with that and I know there are probably emotions involved, but you've absolutely got to fire him.

If he'd do that on a trip with and paid for by his boss imagine the **** he'd do when you're not watching. You're ultimately responsible for this dude's judgement calls at your business.
Agreed, and he's shown himself to be irresponsible. If he's going to do all that you said, he should have been able to get it all straightened out and been up in time to go. Wouldn't want him managing anything that is my responsibility. Someone like that will leave you high and dry and not think twice about it.

The question to ask is why did you drink half a bottle of 110 proof whisky?
Because I am an alcoholic?

We went down to Truth BBQ in Houston for dinner earlier that evening, but ended up catching a crawfish special next door at the Porch Swing Pub and I haven't had crawfish in 6+ years. It was great. Had two beers each and were back at the hotel by 8.

I picked up a bottle of Russell's Reserve Single Barrel earlier in the week and had only sipped on it. Yes, I was drinking high quality bourbon out of hotel paper cups. Probably something I need to work on.

Anyhow after Thursday and Friday night, I still had half a bottle in the room Saturday night and I had 2 choices... Pour it down the drain or down the hatch, because I could not fly it home the next morning. Did I mention it was Russell's Reserve Single Barrel?

So I sat in my room and called up or texted old buddies I haven't talked to enough in recent years and got drunk. Looks like I crawled into bed around 10:45-11:00. I did wander down to the lobby around 9:15 to get some water and M&Ms to help my cause. While down there, I saw my employee at the bar drinking a yellow belly and watching basketball by himself. We had our pleasantries and confirmed 5:15 in lobby.

So I am pretty drunk, but well hydrated at bedtime at 11:00 pm. Next thing I know it's 1:30am and an episode of Cops is taking place out in the hallway.

So long story short is I didn't get drunk in front of my employee. I never would. I just got hammered in the privacy of my hotel room by refusing to waste quality bourbon, just like a proper high functioning alcoholic should do.

On a plane from Houston to Salt Lake typing this. Took an employee on a work trip for some training down in Houston. Stayed at a Hilton Garden Inn for a few nights and in rooms across the hall from each other.

This guy is late 30's, common law married to a gal, with 2 kids in jr high. He's definitely rough around the edges, but lots of restaurant workers are. He's also my most productive employee and I'm trying to get him up to speed to be a manager down the road Well I was.

Well last night at 1:30 am I hear a racket outside in the hall. My still drunk *** lumbers to the door and there's a chick beating on his door asking for her purse. After a couple minutes I get dressed to go slap the ho and tell him to open the 17ing door. But now she's gone and the purse is in the hall. The front desk calls me since my name/# is on the room. I go down and talk to the desk guy and security... Both Indian of course.

They informed me he wandered up a few hours earlier after buying her a bottle of wine at the bar. She's a hooker who marked him in the lobby after a John no showed. I got the manager and security guard to not call the cops and they made the ho leave. 97 lbs Indian security guard with a desert eagle sized pistol on his hip went upstairs and grabbed the purse.

Fast forward to this morning, we are supposed to meet in the lobby at 5:15. By 5:40 he hasn't shown or answered any phones so I got a key made and took Sunjay Fife up to go into the room and make sure dude wasn't dead. The latch was locked so I only opened the door enough to tell him to get his áss up. He still ignored and I said in 5 seconds I am calling the police and he's suddenly awake.

3 minutes later he wanders about and the security guy is berating him for all the trouble. Accused him of "doing 17ie-17ie with a call girl." Dude went full Pollyanna and said she just came up to his room to use his phone and when she got weird he asked her to leave and must have been in the shower when she was knocking.

I told him to get his àss in the car we had to leave. The manager stopped him and gave him shìt. I told him we'd discuss it on the 30 minute drive to the airport. I dressed him down and told him I didn't believe one second of his lies he told the security guy.

It's a 17ed up situation. I'm now going to decide if I fire him or just demote him. Not going to tell his family or anyone.

Of all the 17ed up nights in my life this is near the top of the list.. How does the pack feel about it?
Didn’t realize it was illegal to have fun on work trips

Shoot, if I lived anywhere close I’d become a regular. Sounds like my kinda place.

Brick oven pizza, the scenic views he shares, the well-stocked bar... I'd be on the stool next to you.

ETA: Well, rather a stool or two away as is proper. The Urinal Custom is practiced outside of restrooms in many areas of life.

I'm sure in Houston you could of found an old fashioned drunk and given him a present.

I was in a similar spot almost a year ago. My boss at the time, I left for better job, let be part of the decision process with a coworker I was friends with. The guy was a great performer, but at every company event he did something crazy. At one of the last events he attended, he took a stripper back to his room from the bar at 1 in the morning. How did we know he did this? He told a new sales guy that he was taking her back and he could join. He also overslept a work meeting the next morning. This was strike three, but the company kept him around because outside work trips, he was great. Before this he had attempted to fight someone, hit on female coworker at the bar, and no showed a work meeting. After the stripper event, we made him sign an agreement stating he would not drink on company time or at company events. He went straight to a gas station and purchased a case of Busch Light and texted me saying "you and this company do not have the balls to let me go." We did and he was let go that day. The guy had a wife and kids, but enough was enough. You are in a rough spot, but one of the reasons we couldn't let our guy go was the fact we provided the drinks. Be careful.

A real man would have been sipping on that straight from the bottle.
