Hello, I think it’s evident that Mississippi State sports bring us disappointment and depression and I’ve recently decided to get into different hobbies that bring me happiness. What are some hobbies that you guys have? I’ve recently started collecting old presidential campaign buttons and coins again.

I have been collecting coins and early US currency since '99. It keeps me engaged specially now that I'm retired. Also starting to look at collectibles from Washington, Lincoln & Grant. The history behind them can be fascinating.

Nice. What kind of collectibles from those presidents do you have?

Medals, original newspaper articles, paper money/notes etc. The medal below is one of my favorites. Engraved by Anthony Piquet, an employee of the United State mint in 1862. It is considered as one of the most beautiful medalets produced by the mint.

Hobbies? I have a teenager and a toddler. What little time I have left is taken up by Mississippi State Disappointment. I'm a bit of a collector of these moments.

BJJ can certainly became a consuming hobby if you are into that sort of thing. I’ve been in it for years and love it. Can’t get enough.

My son started playing drums a couple years ago, and we lucked into having a place right down the road from us that encourages them to perform. Last year, we decided to give their little touring program a shot, and long story short… he’s in a little rock/country band that gets to tour central Arkansas all spring and play short sets at some pretty awesome places.

It’s an absolute blast getting to see 8 and 9 year olds doing everything from Lainey Wilson to Guns n Roses, and believe it or not, they’re pretty dang good!

Nah, look at Ole miss sports and then look at us. In the big 3 that is. Very depressing if you ask me.

This weekend has made one thing crystal clear…. Half you guys are going through a mid life crisis and you’re blaming Mississippi State sports for it.
No, my mid life crisis was years ago. It was red, Italian, very fast, and had two wheels. I like to cook on the grill, I’m venturing out beyond just meat. I’ve taken up golf. I’d like to take up becoming a better wing shooter but not competitive. Plus we’re RVers so that takes up a little of my time.

I keep saying I’m going to get better at golf but have not done it yet. I really enjoy hunting (deer, dove, duck, turkey), so that keeps me busy from September thru April. So I could golf from May through August but it usually gets hot pretty quick. Pretty easy to convince myself to throw something on the grill and sit by the pool during those months.

I don’t really care if I get better at golf or not, I just enjoy getting out there. I play with a regular foursome. We pick up on doubles unless we just have to hear the ball go in the cup. You can improve your lie on any shot off the green. Mulligans are allowed on any errant shots. Sometimes someone will keep score, sometimes not. It’s just a way to enjoy a day.

We just put in a pool last Fall, and I absolutely cannot wait to be floating on that thing in May with a beer in hand and baseball on tv. I’m also a golfer, so the setup that I’m scheming up now is a covered screen for sports/movies, but that can also double as a golf simulator.

I know, I know… no true golfer would ever consider something like that to be real golf, and it won’t ever replace a Saturday with buddies on the course, but it’s about the only way for me to get a few swings in during a week these days.

I don't know, I'm so sick of the typical pace of play I might would rather play on a golf simulator at this point. I'm a terrible golfer and would finish 18 by myself in under 3 hours. In a foursome with just normal golfers that aren't rushing but aren't wasting a lot of time looking at puts from 4 different angles and wasting 10 minutes looking for a lost ball, it's 3 and a half to 4 hours. I don't know what people are doing to turn it into a 5 hours affair.

Where do you like to hike?
I’m lucky enough to have land behind my house that I can take my Labrador on a nice hour long hike a couple times per week. I also just go exploring through the woods where I hunt in the off-season this time of year. I’m in North Mississppi so the Trace has a few good trails too. I’d like to do it more. When my brother retires we may actually take some hiking trips.

I need to take this mentality when it comes to golf. I do enjoy when I’m out there. It’s just a frustrating sport but it is definitely a good way to spend time with friends outdoors.

Brewing, kayaking, fishing (trying to learn it). Coins and presidential election items sounds really interesting. I would be interested in that, but I already spend too much on brewing.

Hobbies besides MSU sports?

Playing sports- gravel and road cycling, play volleyball in a league and open gym pick-up.

Coaching volleyball- basically year round at this point between a club team and helping direct a HS program with 5 teams.

Refurbishing bikes- I used to refurbish and sell for a profit. Now I just have a couple projects each year and modernize/refurbish and then sell at a loss or break even.

Gardening- both flowers and vegetables. Slowly expanding flowers to take grass space since grass is just 17ing worthless and a waste.
Wild flowers mostly, but everything is low maintenance.
Vegetables are always grown from seed and are typically quirky heirloom stuff that is absurdly sensitive to everything, but is awesome when it turns out right. This year it will be watermelons, pumpkins, Winter squash, Roma tomatoes, Purple Cherokee tomatoes, multiple bell peppers, leaf lettuces, cilantro, basil, and dill. I just bought some of the seeds last week when we were staying in a cabin close to Seed Savers in Decorah IA. Seed Savers is a seed exchange group with 900 acres of land. Pretty cool place in the Driftless Region.

I wish travel was a hobby.

100% correct. Then add triple digit summer temps to everything you just said, and that’s where I started thinking…. What sounds better? 5 hours of heat and frustration or playing 9 simulated holes at Pebble Beach with a pool, grill, and cooler 5 feet away?

I've never understood this mindset. Every minute I get on a golf course is a good minute. I love the scenery, and if I get hung up I just drink a beer. I see no need to rush through it like I have somewhere better to be because.....I don't. If I'm going to go through all the pain in the asss of paying and driving out there and hauling clubs around, I'm enjoying it. And I want to play a nice course too.

That said, sometimes I do want to walk some of the average or lesser courses, and that's more for exercise. And yeah I want to play fast there. Guess it's just whatever your objective is.

Buying/driving expensive cars/jets, foreign travel, bodybuilding, gourmet cooking on the grill/smoker, bourbon connoisseur, cigar aficionado

(Actually, drive a Civic, play pickleball, workout a little, hunt deer, teach at church, travel to national parks, cheer for the Dawgs, and have an extraordinary appreciation for a good fast-food meal...especially Taco Bell.)

I would rather be at the pool with a drink in hand or on a boat if the alternative is watching some jackass that hit a 3 wood 280 that one time 6 years ago with a 20 mph wind at his back wait for the green to clear on a par 5 while he's sitting 290 out. Also rather be at the pool or on the boat if the alternative is watching a bunch of hackers on their way to shooting in the mid to high 90's get everybody in their group to read a put from both sides of the hole. But slow play doesn't seem to be limited to bad golfers. I see lots of decent to good golfers play just painfully slow. If you're in a tournament, whatever. But if you are betting so much money that you feel the need to spend 3 minutes reading a putt, that means you're betting too much for your bankroll and you're a jackass. But also just generally, while the golf courses I normally play are nice, lots of the worst ones for pace of play aren't anything special as far as views. They are nice golf courses weaving through a housing development and it's not some picturesque view that much better than what you'd get at a local park.

But also it's just about being able to do something else on the day besides golf. I usually have something to do on the weekends that needs to get done, whether it's for kids or taking care of something around the house or work. If people play 4 hour rounds, I can get to the course by 8 and stick around for lunch and still have most of the afternoon to do things. A 5 hour round means even if you get there early, you're still halfway into the afternoon by the time you finish lunch. Plus that extra hour usually has you baking in the hottest part of the day, so you're actually tired when you get done, just from the oppressive heat. And for no good reason. There's just no reason to take more than 4 hours to play a round of golf if you're not in a serious professional tournament.

I will say a huge part of it is the golf courses' fault. I've seen some do 7 minute intervals for tee times, so of course those are bad. But reasonable tee times don't really fix the issue either because of slow golfers.

I think you’ll enjoy the pool. We finished ours last spring, so last summer was our first with it. It definitely helps fill some dead time during the summer. Gets the kids outside and off the iPad as well. The maintenance on them is never as bad as some make it out to be either. However, I did grow up with one in the backyard, so maybe I’m just used to it. But during the summer, I may spend 30 or 45 minutes all week on maintenance.
